I know both those sayings as shepherds rather than sailors.

an odd observation from my travels . . . . equines have feelings . . .
drove to Texas on a visit; DW wanted to go tour Southfork aka the Dallas tv series ranch. so we did.
very few scenes were actually filmed 'on site' - a film set was built for all the interior shots - modeled after a _different_ house!
anyway.... they have animals on the ranch - and in one pen was a donkey/burro? and a companion miniature horse/pony.
the donkey came right up to the fence for a pet & scratch , , , then followed us as we left an walked along the path.
I went back two more times to give him some attention and a nice scratching. he was so starved for attention, felt bad for the guy....
