egg

An egg is the organic vessel containing the zygote in which an embryo develops until it can survive on its own, at which point the animal hatches. An egg results from fertilization of an egg cell. Most arthropods, vertebrates (excluding live-bearing mammals), and mollusks lay eggs, although some, such as scorpions, do not.
Reptile eggs, bird eggs, and monotreme eggs are laid out of water and are surrounded by a protective shell, either flexible or inflexible. Eggs laid on land or in nests are usually kept within a warm and favorable temperature range while the embryo grows. When the embryo is adequately developed it hatches, i.e., breaks out of the egg's shell. Some embryos have a temporary egg tooth they use to crack, pip, or break the eggshell or covering.
The largest recorded egg is from a whale shark and was 30 cm × 14 cm × 9 cm (11.8 in × 5.5 in × 3.5 in) in size. Whale shark eggs typically hatch within the mother. At 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) and up to 17.8 cm × 14 cm (7.0 in × 5.5 in), the ostrich egg is the largest egg of any living bird, though the extinct elephant bird and some non-avian dinosaurs laid larger eggs. The bee hummingbird produces the smallest known bird egg, which weighs half of a gram (around 0.02 oz). Some eggs laid by reptiles and most fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates can be even smaller.
Reproductive structures similar to the egg in other kingdoms are termed "spores," or in spermatophytes "seeds," or in gametophytes "egg cells".

Egg and toast fried in a skillet

My ex-wife taught me how to make a very simple, but delicious sandwich. All you have to do is take a slice of bread, push a drinking glass into it, cutting out a small round piece. You butter the bread and begin frying it. You then break an egg and put the yolk in the hole, and let it cook. When...

Recipe Southern Style Baked Mac & Cheese using eggs as a binder.

There has been an African American manner to preparing macaroni and cheese. It is baked using egg and flour as a binder. Since I use cheddar cheese, there is no reason to use additional butter. I was taught to cook the macaroni until firm, al dente. Cook and then drain the macaroni. Then let it...

    Scrambled eggs!

How do you make yours? I've seen so many different ways over time. Only the eggs, added milk, added cream, added milk and cream, added cheese.. you name it. I did actually used to add a splash of milk to mine, while stirring in a frying pan, but I recently came across a recipe/method from...

What's the best way to remove the shell of hard boiled eggs?

We had family over at Christmas and instead of cooking set meals we spread out a number of different bits for people to pick at, including a simple egg salad that my wife likes to make; bed of iceberg lettuce, sliced cucumber, chopped cherry tomatoes, smattering of mayonnaise, and then add some...

Does anyone else like eating good old eggs for breakfast?

Okay I'm a big food lover, I admit it. But I am not a big cook nor do I like asking my mother to make me breakfast because she's usually busy enough for dinner. When it comes to eggs, I LOVE THEM! I eat them so I can feel full longer, benefit from it's vitamins and protein, and it also helps...

Oil or Butter When Cooking Eggs?

I love cooking eggs all sorts of ways, and I've almost always used butter to cook them. My grandparents always used to cook their eggs in olive oil instead - which is nice too, I love the smell of it. However when I am making omelettes, I try to get the eggs to set without browning them - which...

    Your favourite tapas?

This post was inspired by this BBC Good Food feature on tapas. When we go out for lunch in Spain, or when I'm entertaining here in the UK or over there, I love a selection of tapas. My own particular favourites are: tortilla albondigas (meatballs) magre de cerdo (tomato-based pork stew)...
