egg

An egg is the organic vessel containing the zygote in which an embryo develops until it can survive on its own, at which point the animal hatches. An egg results from fertilization of an egg cell. Most arthropods, vertebrates (excluding live-bearing mammals), and mollusks lay eggs, although some, such as scorpions, do not.
Reptile eggs, bird eggs, and monotreme eggs are laid out of water and are surrounded by a protective shell, either flexible or inflexible. Eggs laid on land or in nests are usually kept within a warm and favorable temperature range while the embryo grows. When the embryo is adequately developed it hatches, i.e., breaks out of the egg's shell. Some embryos have a temporary egg tooth they use to crack, pip, or break the eggshell or covering.
The largest recorded egg is from a whale shark and was 30 cm × 14 cm × 9 cm (11.8 in × 5.5 in × 3.5 in) in size. Whale shark eggs typically hatch within the mother. At 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) and up to 17.8 cm × 14 cm (7.0 in × 5.5 in), the ostrich egg is the largest egg of any living bird, though the extinct elephant bird and some non-avian dinosaurs laid larger eggs. The bee hummingbird produces the smallest known bird egg, which weighs half of a gram (around 0.02 oz). Some eggs laid by reptiles and most fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates can be even smaller.
Reproductive structures similar to the egg in other kingdoms are termed "spores," or in spermatophytes "seeds," or in gametophytes "egg cells".

    Less usual eggs

Having just got some duck eggs for the first time since April and it made me wonder what other eggs (beside hen) you all have eaten and enjoyed. I've regularly eaten hen, duck (rich, slightly tougher whites) and goose (huge - roughly equivalent to three hen, similar texture) eggs, but have also...

    Recipes starring eggs

I just love eggs. We kept chickens when I was a kid so I ate freshly laid eggs every day. So - what are your most inventive egg recipes? I don't mean simply fried, poached, scrambled or omelettes. There are scrambled egg and omelette threads already! I'm interested in eggs used in other dishes...

How do you poach your eggs?

I have seen some people even chef's on TV who make poached eggs right in the water. That doesn't really look too appealing to me. When I was a kid, my mother always made them in an egg poaching cup. I make them now in the microwave with specially designed egg poaching cups. They are easy to do...

This is a spin-off from another thread (Using the right kitchen utensils). Here is my idea of how perfect scrambled eggs should look. Do you agree? If not post an alternative picture! And... how do you cook the perfect scrambled eggs?

What oil do you use to fry an egg?

Are you the type who fries eggs without oil at all using some technology or a plain non-stick pan? I would still prefer to use oil when I fry my egg and sometimes would try butter to achieve that nutty flavor. Most of the time though I use olive oil and oregano in the morning. How about you?

    An egg with two yolks

I regret not taking a picture, because I don't know I will see it again. Two days ago I was 'whipping' up a quick breakfast for my son and sure enough I cracked the second egg and out popped two yolks. I am no 'young yam" as we say in these parts, and I have seen a lot of things, but this was a...

    Egg Shortage

Here in the U.S., we're having an issue with Avian Flu in the Midwest, and it's affecting our egg prices and availability here in Texas, for some reason. One local store is limiting the number of eggs that can be purchased at one time. 3 dozen might seem like a lot of eggs to some people, but...

    Duck eggs

I've seen a few elaborate dishes mention duck eggs as part of their recipes. I've never actually ever tried one and I was just wanting to know how they compare to normal chicken eggs. Obviously, there's a difference in size but is there a difference in texture and taste?

How many eggs can you really eat a day?

I love eggs and specially if I'm on a diet (I love the Dukan diet), I eat a lot of eggs. However, I have always heard you are not supposed to eat too many eggs because they are not good for your health and your cholesterol if eaten too much. How many eggs can you really eat everyday without...

    Recipe Egg/Bread/Cheese Frying Pan Lunch

This is a very nice recipe for when you don't want to think about what you're cooking and you get bored with simple fried or scrambled eggs. Here is what you do: Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan - if you have one that is deep, that's easier. Add bread in bite-size pieces - I usually use...

    Recipe Coddled Eggs

Hereto, you read it correctly, coddled eggs. I thought my oh had gone mad when he announced he wanted cobbled eggs at the weekend. Do you always have eggs, milk and cheese on hand?

I have to ask this question because it seems in my home these are three food items we try never to be without. We always make sure that we stock up on eggs, milk and cheese. Yes when it comes to cooking all three of these can be essential. Eggs are used much in baking and so can milk. Cheese...

Egg and toast fried in a skillet

My ex-wife taught me how to make a very simple, but delicious sandwich. All you have to do is take a slice of bread, push a drinking glass into it, cutting out a small round piece. You butter the bread and begin frying it. You then break an egg and put the yolk in the hole, and let it cook. When...

Recipe Southern Style Baked Mac & Cheese using eggs as a binder.

There has been an African American manner to preparing macaroni and cheese. It is baked using egg and flour as a binder. Since I use cheddar cheese, there is no reason to use additional butter. Scrambled eggs!

How do you make yours? I've seen so many different ways over time. Only the eggs, added milk, added cream, added milk and cream, added cheese.. you name it. I did actually used to add a splash of milk to mine, while stirring in a frying pan, but I recently came across a recipe/method from...

What's the best way to remove the shell of hard boiled eggs?

Does anyone else like eating good old eggs for breakfast?

Okay I'm a big food lover, I admit it. But I am not a big cook nor do I like asking my mother to make me breakfast because she's usually busy enough for dinner. When it comes to eggs, I LOVE THEM! I eat them so I can feel full longer, benefit from it's vitamins and protein, and it also helps...
