Question. If you are partaking in afternoon tea TastyReuben, do you skip lunch or dinner?
Thanks! Yes, that’s the only thing I didn’t make (and the bread).A splendid spread. I am guessing you didn't make the macaroons?
Yes…sort of. The funny thing is, whenever I’m plating everything up, I have to have a sample of this and that, to make sure it’s ok, and then the crust trimmings are a delicious little treat for the tea boss (me!), so while I was getting that together, I’d had a piece of fudge, a macaron, a scone (just plain) and trimmings from six sandwiches - I was nearly full before we started!Question. Did you tell MG about the mayo between the cukes???Didn’t have time to photograph Mr SSOAP’s lunch pail as this morning was a bit rushed but I stopped to take a photo of the cucumber sandwiches because the electric knife is a delight to use for afternoon tea.
It’s really the only thing I use it for but didn’t throw it out in the latest cull because it does such a good job on sandwiches

I make cucumber sandwiches for travelling fractionally differently to cucumber sandwiches for afternoon tea.
You still whip the butter before buttering so you know you’ve got a good even coating without crushing the bread (not crushing the bread is a main aim) but I slice the cucumber differently, removing the seeds then drying off any wetness and slicing the cucumber into long strips, this way they can stay at their optimum for hours![]()

Those look pretty darn good SSOAP! I'll have to try that now that I've a loaf of white bread in the house. That's a rare thing here.
I assure you there’s nothing to tell MG, there’s not a dot of mayo near these sammiches!
They are pretty good too!As I surmised. The true British cucumber sandwich is mayonnaise free.![]()
Just butter or is there a whit of cream cheese in there?I assure you there’s nothing to tell MG, there’s not a dot of mayo near these sammiches!
Just butter.Just butter or is there a whit of cream cheese in there?
Spot on.Just butter.
If any cream cheese went in they would no longer be considered cucumber sandwiches, they’d be cream cheese and cucumber. Which I love a lot but that’s a different thing, it’s only supposed to taste of butter (beaten until light and easily spreadable) and thin slices of cucumber with the seeds left in.
As the saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"it’s only supposed to taste of butter (beaten until light and easily spreadable) and thin slices of cucumber with the seeds left in.
