Cryptic food and drink

I only came up with 1 slice. The other 4 I came up with were herbs.

mace
Balm, mint, dill and sage are all herbs.
Correct! Anagram of 'acme' meaning 'the very best' - 'pickled' being the anagram indicator. @Duck59 thought that might not be admissible by some, as the word 'acme' wasn't in the clue itself.

But surely a cryptic clue does not have to include an anagram in the actual clue. Morning Glory's clue is perfectly acceptable. (If the word was in clue, I might be able to work them out!)

I am not suggesting that a cryptic clue should contain an anagram. What I'm saying is that if there is an anagram, the letters should be within the clue. Otherwise, the solver is effectively trying to solve two clues.

Got that one! But don't ask me to put the answer as a spoiler. haven't fathomed out now to do that yet.

Here's one from me:

'Chelle sounded almost like she was meeting the sea captain, but she was only meeting his wife (4)
Is this a foodie clue? Has it got a definition in the clue? I have looked at the clue and don't have a clue! Hence my asking...

To do a spoiler, reply to the message and click on the icon in the message toolbar that looks a bit like a page of text (the icon that comes before the camera icon). It will give you a drop down menu. Click on Spoiler in the drop-down and you get a Spoiler Panel. Click on continue (you don't need to enter a title).

Position your cursor between the two bracketed words for SPOILER and type your answer. When you send the message it will appear as a Spoiler.

The answer is definitely a food item. It's making me feel quite hungry just thinking about it. There is no definition in the clue - it's entirely cryptic.

I think @Duck59 might argue that there should be a definition in the clue? I mean, according to Ximenes conventions! I certainly find it difficult without...

Normally, I would say that one should have a definition in the clue. However, if we are aware of a specific theme whereby all or certain clues relate to one particular item (say capital cities, underground stations, types of drink or whatever), then the lack of a definition would be acceptable as long as we were aware that there was a theme and that a number of (or indeed, all) such clues were not further defined.

Yes, OK... I'm still completely stuck though! What about you, @Duck59?
