Curry pastes (mainly Thai)

Picked this up today for Yotam Ottolenghi’s ‘Tamarind Rarebit Crumpet’ as that’s what I landed on for my Whimsy Wednesday treat, which has to be easy to make/assemble and feel like a proper treat.

Read the tamarind paste reviews before buying because I couldn’t get hold of the usual ‘Thai Taste’ one in time.
The Morrisons version was slated and that’s who’s delivering to me next so I made an extra trip today to get this one.
I was amazed by how many more good pastes Waitrose had in since I was last there. A really diverse selection of quality products, head and shoulders above any of the other supermarkets.

I’m happy to give this one a try, the reviews were very good.
What’s not so good is going into Waitrose to pick up a £2 jar of Tamarind paste cost me £58 😂

That's cool you got one that's ready to use! Mines not ready to go but at least I'm not processing mostly dried tamarind fruit into paste like I've been doing. I got this at the Vietnamese/Thai store I visited last week.

Great that you can control the quality and quantities.
I am grateful this tamarind is good to go but you really have to watch the labels on them because mostly there’s a lot more water in these pastes than tamarind. This one is 37%
Not that it’s a problem, you just need to use more!

Tamarind paste is used in a lot of Asian cooking as a souring agent. Alternately, it's used as a contrast to palm sugar, creating a "sweet & sour"effect. I don't see the cheese or cream as "sweet", but maybe I'm just being ignorant because I've never tried it.

I don't think of cheese or cream as sweet ingredients and am pretty sure when I try the paste with the cheese I'll just get a sour squeak! 😄

I'd be really interested to see how that works. I get the tamarind paste in the "piccalilli", but I can't get my tastebuds around tamarind paste with cheese and cream.
I'm with you here.
I'll be keen to hear how it turns out.

I still make Tamarind juice/paste from scratch. Simply because I got mature tamarind trees. And I only make it once or twice per year.
