How is the corona virus affecting you?

epicuric I know someone who works at a small portuguese travel agency. The government had a simplified layoff for tourism but now that's over and he's back at work one week per month, but the agency isn't selling anything, he thinks they will close :( Most portuguese are travelling inside the country and don't use an agency for that. Some areas of the country have become so popular with local tourists you can no longer find accommodation there!

I have touched on this one before, but this is prize idiocy. We can't go and watch a game of cricket with friends, even though we'd be sitting in the open air, well away from anyone else. We can, though, go into a pub with the same people, crammed together indoors.
Here they relaxed the rules, first thing is everybody jumps on a plane and flies to the South Island. Wtf. Don't bring it here!!! Although I suspect it's already here. We were at a restaurant last night, no masks anywhere.

Brain fart. I had Dayton in my head, for some reason, when you avatar text clearly says Akron.

CD
Well, I live less than an hour from Dayton, and when we head south, I have to stop and pee at the rest area just over the river, by the Florence Mall. That's what?...75 minutes? So that's how long I can hold it.

So yesterday my elderly aunt who lives in SE Texas fell and broke her hip. She and my cousins had just gotten back about a week ago after evacuating due to the hurricane. Anyway, she had surgery on her hip today. She is 91. Only one of her daughters is allowed to see her and no other visitors. She is not allowed to have flowers or anything else sent for obvious reasons. The surgery went well and she is in a separate ward from COVID-19 patients, but she will have to go to a rehabilitation nursing facility for physical therapy when she is able to start therapy. I can't go there, I can't get on a plane, it's useless for me to drive there since I would need to quarantine for 14 days before I could see anyone (and stay in a hotel), and the hospital or rehab center is not going to let me in even if I tell them I have been in quarantine. Frustrating and sad. I normally this time of year am planning my trip there for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving this year had already been canceled due to the virus, now this.

On a positive note, I found a resort in South Carolina near the beach that got bad reviews from a few people because they "have too many stupid COVID rules" which made me decide to book a vacation for next month for a couple of weeks. Geeze, they make people reserve pool times and they clean things too often, plus they have "entrance only" and "exit only" gates for the pool and have the pool chairs spread far apart to help keep social distancing. Oh how horrible, LOL.

I also like this resort because it has villas that each have their own entrance and is not one of those "towers" where you have to go into a lobby and use an elevator each time you come and go from your room. Looking forward to getting to the beach during off-season when there won't be many people around. It might be a bit chilly for bathing suits but that's okay, bound to be warmer than it will be up here in OH!

Isn't life wonderful? We have a government that is insisting that people "follow the rules" while simultaneously - and with breathtaking chutzpah - announcing that they intend to break international law. But it's only in a "specific and limited way." So that's all right then.

Okay, I'm off to the Co-op to go and nick six bottles of wine. Because surely that's only breaking the law in a "specific and limited way"?

Once again I am not feeling proud to be British. I caught part of a documentary on Margaret Thatcher in the 80's a couple of weeks ago. I don't want to get into the pros and cons of Thatcher, but they showed a clip of her visiting Northern Ireland, getting out of her car and leaving her protection behind to mingle in potentially very hostile crowds to shake hands. At the time, this was a huge risk to her personal security. Fast forward to 2020 and we see clips of Johnson hiding in a fridge to evade difficult questions from journalists. How on earth did we get here?

Commuted into work last Tuesday. So many people have become self appointed face mask police. Witnessed an interaction where a man made a motion with pulling up his mask at someone. He did it again when she didn't notice/respond. He yelled "Cover your nose!" She complied and he yelled "Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!." This was done in a nasty manner. I also notice a lot of glaring eyes while on mass transit. There is so much violence on the news concerning mask requests/wearing. I have become quite fearful. Thank goodness I only have to physically go in once a week.

Here in Portugal, people who are hospitalized in public hospitals aren't allowed to have visitors since March. My mom was hospitalized for kidney surgery back then and she was going crazy from not seeing anyone, even though her hospital didn't have Covid patients back then they just wouldn't allow visitors :(

And the UK just closed the air corridor with us. One of my former classmates who's an immigrant in London managed to return to London just a couple of the days before the corridor closed.

I normally use curbside pickup when shopping where I order everything online and do not have to go inside of stores. A few times I have gone into stores (double masked). In Ohio it is a state mandate that adults and children over 10 must wear a mask inside of stores and other buildings. I have not confronted anyone personally about not wearing their masks properly, but I alerted store management when I saw a woman and her four children (two of whom were older teenagers) shopping without masks on. The management made them leave and she threw a fit, making a scene as they escorted them all to the door. Also, once when I went to pick up a prescription I saw a police officer, who doubles as a security guard when off duty, standing within 2 feet of a cashier with his mask pulled down around his chin. I took a photo of him and emailed it to the chief of police for my city. Chief thanked me for bringing to his attention so he could address the issue with all of his officers as a training tool. He was definitely not happy that his officer was not complying with state mandates.

So yeah, confronting people in a nasty manner is rude, but maybe the guy was just fed up with people who know better but choose not to comply. It's also rude for people who obviously know how the virus is transmitted to not take the time to help stop the spread. Wearing a mask around your chin or only covering the mouth and not the nose is obviously not as effective as keeping the mask pulled up.

Well Guernsey had gone 129 days corona virus free but we recently had a positive result from the 7 day swab result of someone who had been to the UK for medical reasons.
They self isolated on their return and, as mentioned, they had their 7 day swab so the authorities are confident that they've caught it in time.
