How is the corona virus affecting you?

Yup, 'intelligent' lockdown has been instated until January 19th. My stepson with mental issues was on the top of the list finally to be taken into a facility, and now due to lockdown it will be January 19th again at the minimum. He also doesn't get his daily group care, so he's going to be bored and on our hands the whole six weeks. Plus his brother is not able to go to school either, and conflict between them two has had us call the cops during the last lockdown. So we're really unhappy with this situation, as it was almost resolved. A year ago already the Psychiatrist said the eldest step son needed urgent pschiatric care, and here we are..

Aside from this the lockdown means all non urgent stores & facilities are closed, schools are closed, no more than 2 visitors a day per household and working from home is mandatory when possible. If this does not work we'll get the scenario where the army is on the street like Italy and France. It's not looking good.

I was reflecting this evening on the student cooks at the Napa Wine Country Culinary Institute and how their graduation would be met with uncertainty finding work in restaurants.

There are three such institutes in the Napa Valley ....

The Culinary Institute of America
The Napa Valley Cooking School
The Silverado Cooking School

Understand that the Napa Valley Wine Country is a hot tourist destination in season and food and drink are top elements for the tourists. It's no accident that these Culinary Institutes exist there.

The French Laundry Restaurant is a hot spot, serving nine course meals which vary all the time.

The graduates from those schools, likely have little to look forward to. Which brings up another subject, How many restaurants have been forced to close - permanently? I've seen good restaurants close permanently for a lot of reasons, bad economic times, owner deaths, etc., but never pandemic, till now.

Around a third of the UK population is now living under the strictest, tier 3 regulations. This includes London. All restaurants in those areas are now closed again, and with the Christmas free-for-all approaching I don't see this situation changing for some time.

They've just started distributing the Pfizer Vaccine in the USA. It'll be interesting to see how they monitor results and what those results will be. Watch for results of unwanted side effects.

The free-for-all is, apparently, still on. Quite why is utterly bewildering. It's like some kind of especially sick game show whereby people race up and down the country for five days in an attempt to wipe out as many elderly relatives as possible.

A good side effect of mask wearing and all the other anti Covid measures in Portugal: flu cases are almost non existent this year. The % of flu cases per 100,000 inhabitants was 0% between the last weeks of November and the first week of December.

This may be inaccurate in that they may be among the COVID numbers. When I tested positive, the health department rep. asked me about all respiratory symptoms. I had some sinus pressure and she said that "tell me more as COVID can mimic the flu". I don't understand how one is supposed to differentiate the two. Unless a person tests positive, there is no way to know if symptoms are flu-related or COVID.

The only reported side effects here so far are for people with severe allergy problems, as in those who have to carry an epi-pen. A couple of cases were reported on the first day, so such people are being advised not to have the vaccine, even if they need it for other reasons.

All people who have flu like symptoms are being tested for Covid in Portugal (unless they don't report it to health authorities).

It is madness. How many grannies need to sacrificed on the altar of Bozo's ego?

I couldn't agree more. Germany have all but cancelled Christmas and we should do the same in the UK. Its a small price to pay. The difficult area is with very old and frail people for whom 'it may be their last Christmas' so relatives obviously want to visit.

The other way of looking at it (with which I don't agree) is that if we impose severe restrictions over Christmas, people won't adhere to them anyway.
