How is the corona virus affecting you?

MrsT wanted to find out if she qualifies for the vaccine. She's 57, but has two preexisting conditions. She sent emails (via their "patient portals" - the only way to reach a doctor) yesterday. Here's a summary of the first exchange (cardiologist):

Hi, I'd like to find out, as a patient of Dr. S, whether I'm eligible to receive the Covid vaccine under the state's preexisting condition guidelines.

We're not giving the vaccine. Please contact your family doctor.

I understand you're not giving the vaccine, I'm asking if my heart condition makes me eligible for the vaccine now, and if so, how I register for that.

We're not giving the vaccine at this time. Individuals 80 and over are eligible, as well as people with certain preexisting conditions.

I don't have the same pre existing condition your wife has, but my doctor has recommended I wait with the vaccine because it needs further testing on people with autoimmune disorders/pre existing conditions (which is going on currently) because only a few of those conditions were present at the trial. My personal conditions were not included.

Good that you did that but for some reason I doubt it will change any minds. If anyone posted that the vaccine was bogus or the pandemic was a hoax on this forum the post would be deleted and they would be immediately banned. This hasn't been necessary so far. Everyone here seems to share a similar view with regard to the vaccine and safety measures.

That's for posting that. She's still waiting to here from her auto-immune specialist. It usually takes them several days for non-emergencies.

That's because we are all awesome! ;-) I think it really helps to have kind and reasonable moderators to run a forum. I ran one ages ago and know it's not easy. I appreciate all that you all do to make this forum a great place to be.
 
It was reported on the news last night that our County Health Department is overwhelmed with calls and emails from people wanting the vaccine. Our Governor lowered the "most vulnerable" age to 65 so they will get first priority. They are just taking names now for others wanting the vaccine.

Same thing happened last night in two hospitals in the Lisbon area, with one man drying inside an ambulance. Apparently Portugal is the country with worst Covid mortality per 1milion habitants in Europe.

I just got off the phone with my sister, and in Texas, they have "hubs" set up in cities and around the State. They are generally hospitals that are part of well established hospital networks, such as Methodist Hospitals in Houston, and probably Presbyterian Hospitals of Dallas. These networks have the infrastructure to handle the vaccines, which have very difficult storage issues.

I don't know how Ohio is doing their distribution. But, that's a possible place to look. I plan to do some looking here on Monday. I don't know whether I qualify, either. Every State has its own guidelines.

In the UK our government, and our dear leader Boris have completely screwed this pandemic up, which is why we are in such a hole and soon 100,000 of us will be dead. However, they did invest in a range of vaccines and so we were the first to start vaccinating safely (Russian and Chinese versions anyone?) And now we are the first to have three vaccines in distribution including the easiest and cheapest.
Fortunately the government has let the scientists and clinicians get on with their stuff and have put the responsibility for distribution in the hands of the Army, the best logistics outfit going. As a result it looks like all over 50s will have the first jab by the end of March and we are most likely to be the first to herd immunity.

In short, when politicians stop trying to run the show and let the experts get on with it then things tend to go right.
