Back in the 70s Cheshire Council were considering stamping their plastic bin bags with "NOT FOR HOT ASHES". One councillor declared that anyone considering putting hot ashes in a plastic bag probably couldn't read anyway.
 
I had to laugh at MrsTasty today. It's only the second time, I think, that she's been out of the house since March 8th, we had to go sign our tax return, and out and about, there really isn't much evidence of anything being different. My area is strong in the "it's just the flu" belief, and they're rather proud, on the whole, to be openly flouting what they see as ridiculous overreaction on the part of the government


We're out driving around, and there's my wife, yelling in the car at the other cars on the road, "WHAT'RE YOU DOING OUT?! GO HOME! GET THE HELL HOME!"

We'd pass some kids skateboarding or some guys standing in a driveway chatting up close, and it was, "BACK UP, YOU MORONS! WHERE'S YOUR G*D**M MASKS?!"

If a powerful person says something in public, on TV, is it politically charged to repeat what they said? I saw what I saw, and heard what I heard. Am I being partisan if I say what I saw and heard exactly as I saw it and heard it?

My wife is in the medical profession. She is an RN but has been an administration for years. It is non stop for her. She goes to work and when she is home she is on the phone. I work in a poultry processing plant so I go to work everyday. We both wear masks. One daughter works in a hospital. One works from home. All three son in laws are working from home. Have a three week old granddaughter that I have not seen. Wife watched the grandkids when the baby was being born. Would love to go see her and feel bad that I have. But with me going to work with several hundred people everyday I do not want to risk possibly exposing any of them.
 
We are not hoarders by any means. Wife went to Costco a few times before all this hit and over the past couple of years her buying a 30 pack roll of toilet paper because she wasn’t sure how much we had resulted in us having plenty. We have one 30 pack to an elderly couple that it is difficult for them to get out and shop. But we still have plenty. Food, other than eggs we have been ok. For some odd reason, and we never do this and I can’t explain why we did this but we went to The Fresh Market and they had one lb packages of ground chuck for $2.99 per lb and we bought ten lbs. same with chicken breasts. This was before this thing got going and we had no idea hoarding anything other than toilet paper was going to happen.

That's tough, but you are right to be sensible. It's concerning to see people scorning the medical advice and putting themselves and others at risk.

I thing what started out as 'hoarding' has now changed. Within reason it seems a good idea to buy double and go shopping half as often.

Wondered if you were referring to Trump's comments about disinfectant. Maybe not, as its been all over the news already including footage of him saying it. Its been covered extensively here as I expect it has in the States.

Yeah - I've stopped going out at all. I'm too afraid as I have a heart issue. In itself not life threatening unless it causes blood clots, but if it occurs coupled with Covid I fear it would be very problematic to say the least. I'm relying on home delivery which is hit and miss - but I am doubling up on eggs and a few other things just because I'm never sure when the next available slot will be. The slots get released a few days at a time and seem to be announced at random times.

I've been reading Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, which was written in 2003. He covers the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918, along with other pandemics and - along with the scientists he consults - makes it abundantly clear that it is inevitable that something similar is always round the corner. The book, in the usual Bryson style, is entertaining and illuminating, but also pretty scary.

I absolutely love Bill Bryson's books. Probably my favorite modern author. Bryson, or possibly Neil Gaiman. Probably Bryson.

As to stupid things powerful people say, sometimes, those powerful people forget that once you're in that position, you can't just pop off any old thing that pops into your head. You're the president/prime minister/grand poobah, and even if you're talking about ice cream flavors, your words carry extra weight, because of your position.

When you're in that position, sorry, you don't get to freewheel or brainstorm or spitball, especially in front of the cameras.

About all we hear from the UK government is that "we will be guided by the science." This is meaningless piffle. Scientists rarely agree with one another and much of science is about proving people wrong. The better scientists try to prove themselves wrong.

What the government are really saying is, "When everything goes horribly wrong, don't blame us."
