Let’s see your market(s)!

I hate shopping apart from food shopping.
I like taking my time to see who sells what and how the products differ.
I’ll even compare the ingredients labels while I’m there to see which one has more of the good ingredients before I buy.
The result of this is I need different things from different places and regularly shop in four different supermarkets because for example “that one does the best chilli jam, or only that one sells the good gluten free rolls .. and on and on.

So I really don’t go shopping with anyone else anymore because if I want to spent 20 minutes comparing soy sauce brands then I will 😂

I think it stems from liking food and experiencing being super poor when I was a student. I view money as something that’s hard to accumulate and to hold onto so if I’m parting with it I want to know I’m not wasting it.

We don't get perfectly formed tomatoes, identical carrots, rigorously plump bell peppers or perfect potatoes over here. Thank goodness, because that means if I want some tiny carrots, or "small" peppers, or tiny potatoes for making a dish - then I can find them by rummaging around the supermarket shelves. I'm also extremely happy that the farmers can sell their entire harvest of vegetables, regardless of size, rather than acceding to the ridiculous demands of "perfectly-sized fruit and veg" because they look prettier (and the farmer loses 40% of his harvest).
I go to the market/supermarket and select my fruit and veg, rather than having some daft buyer selecting them for me.
In my neighbourhood, we've actually got farmers who bring their produce directly from their farms and sell it to us at outrageously low prices. They'll do us a "Combo" - 1kg potatoes, 1 kg tomatoes, 1 kg carrots, 1 kg plantains, 1 kg lettuce, etc, etc, etc,.
I don't buy from them, either - because I like to choose exactly what I want, not what is imposed on me.

This the “gourmet” market I frequently mention, Dorothy Lane Markets:

I always forget to grab the outside, so that pic is from The Dayton Daily News.

I go there because I can find things like this that even the huuuuuuge international market won’t have.

They’re know for their meat, bakery, deli, and cheese departments.

I, of course, forgot to take pics of anything after the meat. I got distracted.

One thing I love about DLM - their staff are trained. 9 times out of 10, if I’m looking for something and they don’t have it, they’ll ask, “What are you planning to use it for?” and when I tell them, they’ll readily recommend a substitute, and then tell me why that’s their recommendation. They don’t just pull something out of their backsides.

It's always a pleasure to work with people that actually know what they're doing. 🤠

I'm always surprised at those pictures.
So much space, so few people
It could be the sheer size of the place as well - as you can see from the pic, the parking area is full, and it’s large, but the store is almost 125,000 sq feet, so it can take a lot of people.

I know my own definition of “crowded:” if I turn down an aisle and someone else is in it…it’s crowded!

Serious
That's a shop of more than 1 ha!
That's sounds huge.
But I've never measured our big supermarkets....
