Round 3 nearly went to the lawnmower but I rallied at the last minute....

This time I was watched for more than half of my time cutting the lawn by a kookaburra (it's a large kingfisher that mostly hunts in fields rather than fishing in ponds). I was able to walk passed it with the lawnmower running within maybe 5-7.5m from it.

Having a pause before round 4.

Having lunch with my dad's cousin and her husband. She and I 1st met at dad's funeral and have stayed in touch, looking forward to a good natter and maybe learn a bit more about dad's family.

Well, it’s Sunday in Amishland, which means just about everything other than Walmart is closed today.

For breakfast, we’re going to a diner we found last time we were here and loved so much, we ate there four times, I think. It’s owned by a Greek family, so they’re still open.

We’re going to see if we can find a garden center that’s open, so we can buy a couple of hanging baskets and bring a little bit of Pennsylvania home with us. We head back tomorrow.

Other than that, it’s a wide-open day.

You need to buy some full Amish outfits while there, to wear at home and freak out the neighbors.

I remember a song from elementary school about kookaburras, something about an old gum tree and a laughing kookaburra. Do kookburras have a raucous call that sounds like laughter or something? I always wondered. We had a choir teacher in the 3rd grade who loved to teach us songs from other countries, like that Skye Boat Song, and similar.

Kookaburra was one of those songs we had to sing in rounds, like Row, Row, Row Your Boat.

I'm delighted to say that my daughter cleaned the patio area making it nice for barbecuing and my wife and I cleaned up the basement.

The idea with the basement is so that I have a place to record my videos and do some voice over.

And later on I'm meeting a friend for dinner at 8:00 p.m. in a local bar really looking forward to seeing him, he's going through a nasty divorce. Needs moral support.

Yep, they do and it's no exaggeration. They are properly known as a laughing kookaburra...

This site has a pretty accurate sound clip. Laughing Kookaburra Calls | Wildlife Sounds by Wild Ambience . We actually recognise the local bird family around us by their call. It is marginally different to those elsewhere. So we always know when a distant bird has stayed into our area.
Curiously they actually have to learn their call. It doesn't come naturally, so listening to a juvenile try for 6-9 months is hard work! It's rough and not even vaguely like the above call.
