Plans for today (2024)

Thanks! Would you believe that not 10 minutes over the NC-Virginia border…it started to snow!

It snowed off and on all the way home, but mostly flurries, except between Chillicothe and Washington CH (Ohio) - it properly snowed!
Not surprising, we have had flurries here most of the day. Just a little accumulation. Glad you didn't run into anything heavy and made it home safely!

…and I’m sick. I think I finally picked up that respiratory thing that’s going around the entire country. Sore throat and congestion, mainly.

We have to return the rental car today, and I’ve got a broken toilet handle to replace, and I need a thing or two from Kroger.

Also will make an attempt to get some Christmas lights out front.

Go spread them germs, baby! Sorry. I know you have stuff that needs to get done that leaves you no choice. Got any masks on hand?

My youngest DD and her DH are coming over for dinner. I have the lobster and shrimp shells and fish bones boiling for stock, and I have some scallop pieces, Alaskan king crab, shrimp, and a piece of grouper thawing for the chowder. I am going to put the shrimp and scallop pieces in the reduced chowder and simmer briefly, then top the bowls with the grouper and crab just before serving so they don't fall apart and get lost in the chowder.

I've also got some octopus and some Ahi tuna thawing for appetizers (I will encrust the Ahi with sesame seeds and pan fry it, DD is bringing wasabi). I think the octopus I will just lightly marinade and sear in a cast iron skillet. It's precooked and it's too cold and windy for the grill. Also got some garlic rolls rising in the oven. I made the same rolls from sourdough starter as I made for Thanksgiving but I incorporated garlic and parsley flakes in the dough and dredged them in butter.

Now gotta get in the shower, vacuum, and tidy the guest bathroom (it's clean it just needs a quick spruce-up).

I think nephew and his wife might be a bit salty they didn't get invited, but the wife doesn't eat seafood and they have his kids from his first marriage until next weekend (ages 10 and 12). His son is super picky and whiny when he doesn't get his way or doesn't like the food, which unless it's pizza or macaroni and cheese, there is usually a complaint. I would have to cook something separate for nephew's wife and his son, and his daughter would eat the seafood but she's very messy. She always has to have a BM whenever she is here and clogs the toilet by using too much toilet paper. Every time she has been here we had to spend a good deal of time plunging the toilet after she left, and one time it resulted in us calling a plumber. Even worse is she knows she does it and finds it funny. IT'S NOT.

So really relieved it's just going to be the four of us, we always have a good time together. Okay so maybe I will remember to take photos of the food later. Or maybe not!

I can see how that would be a wise investment!

Honestly, I would rather just pack up my entire kitchen and go cook a meal over there! I love them all dearly, but there are multiple reasons why that just works out better since they have their rooms and their toys and electronic devices to keep them occupied. My house just isn't set up for children, and my bathroom isn't equipped to handle little Ms. P!

Well I edited and got the blurry spoiler to work but don't know why the regular one wasn't hiding my previous text completely like it normally does.

I just searched for a pic for toilet auger. Some of those brands, like Rigid, are *stupid* expensive. They're all pretty much the same thing and no motors, controls, etc. I've got this one:View attachment 121230
Wow that's very reasonably priced. I will need to get us one of those. UGH. But I will NOT be the one who uses it!

Honestly, the last couple of times they came over I felt like someone should have made her to do the plunging. She's 10, not 4. Maybe it would teach her how unfunny it really is.

That's not an unreasonable tool for her to use, with supervision of course. It can be messy so be prepared...
Well an overflowing toilet is pretty messy on it's own merits...and we just have the one guest bathroom so if there's a gathering, everyone else has to trek into our bedroom (which I don't like) to use the master bath...

Okay I am going to quit griping about it now LOL!
