Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day

But it’s something that’s always mentioned in American peoples bios on places like wiki?
It also seems to come up in conversation a lot more than it generally would here.
I think a lot of people end up being wrong about a lot of it after they do DNA testing, they just know what they've been told.

I've not read any wiki bios. I think we discuss because sometimes we Americans are ashamed of what's going on in our country and we're eager to connect with the countries of our ancestry, anything other than embrace being American. IDK.

That’s sad to read. It doesn’t fit with the image we have about Americans over here.

Is pancake day connected to lent and shrove Tuesday as it is here or is it just pancake day?

I always felt as if the rest of the world judges the majority of the US based on who is in the white house and how that guy got elected after all the stuff he has done (multiple infidelities, constant lies on the campaign trail--more than the average politician, encouraging the Jan 6 storming of the capitol and the hanging of the vice-president at that time, etc.)...meaning that he must reflect the people's values since he did get re-elected. UGH. Now that's as political as I can go here on that one, but I think it makes it apparent that I don't share his "values".

Over here it's Lent and we call shrove Tuesday "Fat Tuesday" but I don't think people are making pancakes in general. We from the US over here pretty much learned that from you guys, I do believe. I am not Catholic, I just like to eat and drink! Which lets me off the hook for the rest of the season leading up to Easter as I am not giving up anything.

Over here for Lent people give up meat and eat seafood on Fridays. Now I always found that rather funny because I know some people who give up burgers on Fridays and have lobster or other glorious seafood instead. Now how is that giving up anything?

I think most of us are simply bewildered and look at it n think “Just how?”
Anyone who’s travelled knows people are very similar the world over and whichever lunatic is in charge rarely represents anyones interests other than their own.

Sounds like a fabulous way to suffer lent 😂
The religious element to pancake day seems to be a very minor part of it here now too.
But Catholicism isn’t the dominant religion, Christianity is by a long way, and for the first time more people don’t believe in God than do.
Religion in general has very much taken a back seat in this country.
So long as the pancakes keep rolling that’s fine by me.

As I say to people, I do not judge a person by their country's politics.

If I did, I would know a lot fewer Americans

That was our ex son-in-law. Their food budget was blown out because he insisted on shrimp, crab, lobster, crawfish during Lent on Fridays. Never stepped foot in church though. A convenient catholic.
