One more for consideration:
Beef Rouladen
This is not something I ate growing up, although it would have been welcomed, at least by me.
No, I first encountered this on a long weekend trip to Germany around 1994. Beef, mustard, pickles, with potatoes and gravy…must try it! It did not disappoint.
I didn’t see it again until 2004, having moved back to Ohio, when we attended a new members meeting of the first German heritage club we joined - yup, the club’s “Ladies Auxiliary” served beef rouladen that night. It became a fast favorite of both MrsT’s and mine.
This is a very standard version (I’ve also seen it with horseradish cream in place of the mustard, and sauerkraut in place of the pickles), and it’s still my favorite beef smeared with mustard, topped with bacon, onion, and dill pickles, all rolled up and simmered in gravy.
