I hope this doesn't sound too harsh so forgive me if it does. I learned that my next door neighbor is moving out. She moved next door to me this past Spring from another unit in the building due to some personal issue with another tenant. She is very loud (ie. tv blaring, slamming doors, noisy friends, etc.). She slams her door so loudly that it will wake me up. It wouldn't be so bad but she goes in/out all the time (~30-40 times per day, no exaggeration). I've talked to her about the door but it hasn't stopped. To add to that, she lets guys from the local homeless shelter crash at her place. She and one of the crashers tested positive for COVID19 over the Summer and refused to stay quarantined or even wear masks. Another tenant is also very loud and will literally scream to be let in if my neighbor doesn't answer her knocks. I am cordial to everyone but steer clear of the whole bunch.

Needless to say, I am thrilled that she's moving. I hope someone more considerate moves in.

I am sorry to hear your neighbour is like that, she sounds like a nightmare and you have reason to be relieved she's moving out, hopefully you'll get someone more peaceful and considerate.

I don't think you understood my post correctly dear, I meant to say I rarely go through oral herpes playing up despite being ill frequently which is when it plays up usually. Don't be too embarrassed though, 1 in 2 people have oral herpes statistically.

I have the other sort. Once you have it its there forever but can lie dormant for years. Luckily its rare for me to get an attack. I can't remember the last time I had an attack but it must have been over 10 years ago. In fact I'd forgotten all about it until LissaC posted about the oral type (we call them cold sores in the UK).

One of my Scottish expat coworkers is desperately looking for vegetable shortening. I'd never heard of that and never saw that in Portuguese supermarkets. Some expat and baking specialty online shops seem to sell it so she's got her fix but it's the first I've ever heard of such a thing

Trex is the well known one in the UK. I aways have some in the fridge. It produces delightfully short (crumbly) pastry. I usually use half Trex and half butter.

Nope, I don't think we have that here. I tried searching for Trex on our online supermarkets and they all showed me T-rex books and toys

I've found these suggestions on an online site of dermatologists.
Sadly I suffer from it too, but I have to say that in the last few years much less.
Without knowing it, I have been following these advices and I have suffered much less in recent years. It won't go away completely, but at least you can keep it at bay a little, maybe?

Increase the intake of vitamins (vitamin C and vitamin D above all) and specific minerals (magnesium, iron, zinc and selenium). They all contribute, albeit in different ways, to supporting the immune system.

Increase the overall intake of antioxidants (in addition to vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, polyphenols, etc.). They combat free radicals and improve the general oxidative state by avoiding creating an optimal situation for viruses.

Increase the intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids. They are anti-inflammatory and stimulate the production of antibodies by the immune system.

Take probiotic and prebiotic foods. They improve intestinalesimbiotic bacterial flora, involved in the trophism of the immune system.
Increase the intake of the amino acid lysine. The reason for this is unknown, but it seems to reduce the frequency of acute cases of cold sores.

Dear MypinchofItaly thank you so much for your advice, I've read the things you mentioned too, since this is the first time this happens I'm waiting to see how often it will occur and hoping it won't be too frequent. I've been supplementing with vitamin C already and took both prebiotics and probiotics in past years although I stopped that one year ago. I'll wait and see what happens. I really hope I will be lucky and won't have to deal with this too often. Glad it has been calming down for you. It's definitely not the end of the world it's just really annoying.

You're welcome, dear :)

As I've suffered from it, I thought it might be interesting to have some information - although of course it's always good to contact specialists directly just in case. I've changed my diet over the years and I've taken different supplements to help me with the Mediterranean anaemia I'm suffering from, so I've woven both things together.

I really hope you don't have any more episodes related to herpes, it's true it's not the end of the world but it's such a nuisance! I understand you!

I have a storage closet in my apartment. I went in there about 5A and my socks got wet. I was half asleep so I didn't think about it until about an hour ago. My caregiver goes in and mops up the water (not too much but noticeable). A few seconds later it reappears. Called maintenance. Apparently, there is a leak in the laundry room (my unit is just on the other side) and it's seeping through the wall to the concrete slab under the floor. The water has nowhere to go except up. We had to empty out the whole area and they are calling in a plumber.

I'll use this as a sign to get all my non-perishables inventoried and put back in an orderly fashion once they fix the problem. ;-0
