Today marks my 15 year anniversary with my current (and hopefully, final) employer. I know that because my congratulatory email came in at 4AM, while I was up working. 😒

In addition to well-wishes from my coworkers posted on an internal website and a nifty desk piece with my name and years of service (which I declined...no desk anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️), I got my choice of about a dozen or so gifts of a value commensurate with my tenure.

Even though they had a couple of kitchen-related items I could have used, I went practical and chose a Dyson vacuum cleaner, as our current cleaner is... 🤔 ...27 years old (!) and makes the most terrific noise nowadays, and I'm down to only one place that still carries bags for it.

I noticed your name in the "who's online" at odd hours of the morning. I wondered if it was a glitch.

I have two Dyson's, a big one downstairs, and a rechargeable small one upstairs (good for vacuuming the stairs). I have a love/hate relationship with the big one I get along fine with the little one.

It was quite amusing really because their fax machine did not have an automatic paper cutter so 20 page faxes were filling the office floor.
I do remember those fax machines! And those paper rolls. I am around your son's age, if I am not mistaken. We used a fax quite a lot, for my parents, who are deaf, it was a great communication tool. And at a point fax was The business comm tool.
Nice of you to share the story with us!

Congratulations!
Wise choice of gift!
Take care with those working hours. I know you do. it sometimes is tangible how stressful your job is, here in the messages...

We used faxes extensively in the 80s. For one job in Aberdeen we'd employed an ex-Shell Quality Assurance Manager. He was in Ellesmere Port and I asked him to send me a report. I received 10 blank pages. I guess that he'd put the pages in upside down so I rang him to resend ensuring that the pages were inserted correctly. I again received 10 blank pages. I rang him again and told him to give the report to the tea lady and ask her to send it.

NSFW. You may want to mute the audio at 0:25 -- gangsta rap soundtrack -- still funny without the audio.

Around 5 years ago I was requested to send copies of some documents to my bank in the Isle of Man. They wanted them sent by mail. I suggested that I attach them to email but they said that was not acceptable. "We accept faxed documents" they said. My fax machine went on the blink 15 years ago and I decided it was not worth buying a new one. In the end I had to send them in the mail (which took two weeks) and cost me around US$25.00.

I always laugh on the rare occasion somebody asks me to fax something to them.

Most offices can handle PDF files sent by email now. Doctor's office are the number one exception.

Doctor's office: We can fax that to you.

Me: No, how about if you send me a .pdf?

Doctor's office: (long pause) What's that?

Me: Something invented by Adobe in 1993.

(Sometimes) Doctor's office: Oh, you mean an Adobe? We don't have that. We can fax that to you.

Me:

We have printer/copier/fax machine. For several years I have been advocating getting rid of the landline phone. G refused because he may need to send a fax three or four times a year. Office Depot is a mile from the house. DUH! WELL the landline rate went from $12 per month to $35 per month. No more landline. YEAH! Guess what - over a year and G has not needed to send a fax.

My parents and sister refuse to give up their landlines. All those phones do is get telemarketer calls, 24/7.

CD, that kind of surprizes me. G has numerous doctors. Prescriptions, lab work, scans - whatever, are all sent directly to the provider. In addition there is a patient portal where we can see/read all orders and Doctor's charts for every visit, test, procedure or follow up order. I usually accompany him to his DR. visits. I also check his chart online.
