CD, that kind of surprizes me. G has numerous doctors. Prescriptions, lab work, scans - whatever, are all sent directly to the provider. In addition there is a patient portal where we can see/read all orders and Doctor's charts for every visit, test, procedure or follow up order. I usually accompany him to his DR. visits. I also check his chart online.

Doctor's offices are getting better. But, thy are often still way behind the rest of us. I have found that about 20-percent of Patient Portals work -- or at least if they do work, they are useless. Hospitals, labs and scanning providers are pretty good. They send results to the doctors online -- then somebody has to print them for the doctor, or otherwise help the doctor look at them.

Doctors have gotten very good at telepointments. Thy can charge for an office visit, without having to actually have a patient come to the office.

Today marks my 15 year anniversary with my current (and hopefully, final) employer. I know that because my congratulatory email came in at 4AM, while I was up working. 😒

In addition to well-wishes from my coworkers posted on an internal website and a nifty desk piece with my name and years of service (which I declined...no desk anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️), I got my choice of about a dozen or so gifts of a value commensurate with my tenure.

Even though they had a couple of kitchen-related items I could have used, I went practical and chose a Dyson vacuum cleaner, as our current cleaner is... 🤔 ...27 years old (!) and makes the most terrific noise nowadays, and I'm down to only one place that still carries bags for it.

For 25 years service we get a watch

Around 5 years ago I was requested to send copies of some documents to my bank in the Isle of Man. They wanted them sent by mail. I suggested that I attach them to email but they said that was not acceptable. "We accept faxed documents" they said. My fax machine went on the blink 15 years ago and I decided it was not worth buying a new one. In the end I had to send them in the mail (which took two weeks) and cost me around US$25.00.

As an aside. One of the documents that they requested was proof of my address, e.g. a services bill. Unfortunately, the majority of the services' contracts are in my wife's name and the rest have my address written in Thai script. I sent them the original of the envelope in which the request came. They were happy with that!

I got a gold watch from McApine's for 25 years (26 years actually - someone miscounted). It rotted away after 10 months but they replaced it (under warranty, I assume). Another year and that rotted away. I brought it up with them again and they blamed the climate in Asia.

Serenity's appointment is Tuesday afternoon. (My cat with kidney failure, see page 996.) She is still eating so they couldn't (wouldn't) bring her in on an emergency basis. However, by yesterday she's definitely slowing down on food consumption. Hopefully she can hang on without suffering - I don't expect driving through the windy, tree-toppling remnants of a hurricane to get her there on an emergency basis would be good for either of us.

Oh, Hurricane/TS Henri - I am not apt to have wind or water issues in the house here,, maybe soggy chickens and a soggy garden - but I fully expect to lose power for a few days. I have full freezers which could either be good or bad.

All of our docs now have patient portals, and all but one have online bill pay (which is more important to me than the portal).

Their effectiveness is dependent on the office and the doctor. My urologist is my age, but he's Mr. Technology, so he uses it, he actively uses a laptop during appointments, and even shows me stuff on his smartphone, using it like a pro.

Some of the other docs, though, they depend on their staff for any and all things technical. My wife's cardiologist probably can't answer a cell phone without help, and during appointments, someone sits in with him to take notes on a laptop.

All of them, regardless, take prescription refills from the pharmacist through a fax. I can request a refill through the various portals, but for communicating with the pharmacy, it's still faxes all the way. They're probably keeping the fax business afloat. Same was true with the vet and our dog's meds. Always a fax.

My new GP, they're just getting into the digital age. Until last year, before my old doc sold the practice, they took cash or check only for payment, no credit cards, and their appointment system was a big paper appointment calendar. There wasn't a computer in the place, and it wasn't like the doc was an old fogey - were the same age, which means when I started seeing him in 2004 (hardly the Dark Ages), we were both 38yo.

Mountain Cat ,
I am so sorry to hear about your sweet girl. I feel for you.
Since the mid 80's we have had 6 cats. Four are buried in our backyard along with a stray dog that adopted us. Five of the six cats have been female. One adorable tuxedo male. The male (Bandit) died relatively young - 10 years old. He was extremely obese and died from heart failure. Two of our girls died from kidney failure - one at 19 years, the other at 22 years. Our fourth girl died from some mysterious infection that invaded her body. She was on heavy doses of antibiotics but did not survive. Our vet said that the infection had damaged all of her organs. She was 20 YO. We have two girls, Sallie Sue and Daisy Faye. Sallie was 9 last Sept. Daisy was 9 in March. Our girls have us well trained. We both love our girls.
I feel for you. Kidney failure is almost always fatal. When our 5th cat died and our 6th cat was pushing 22 I started looking for babies. As much as I loved all of my kitties I do not want to live without cats. I found Sallie before Patches died. I found Daisy a month after Patches died. Both girls required bottle feeding.
No matter what, keep cats in your life. Find a couple of babies that need a loving home.

I use email and attachments to docs and hospitals all the time, for my Dad. Except dentists. There I phone call.

How is that even possible? Rotting I mean.

The same bank (but in Jersey): Some time before the above episode, I was required to send in a completed form to permit the change over from "telephone banking" to "internet banking". They were not interested in fax or email attachments. I duly completed the form and couriered it to Jersey.

Although I had a delivery receipt (unsigned) they swore blind that it hadn't been received. I couriered another completed form and received a delivery receipt some time later. Again the bank said that they had not received the form.

I lost it a little then and told them that I was not posting anymore forms and attached a completed form to the email. Two days later the response came advising me that they had located the two missing letters and eventually offered £360.00 in compensation. I accepted the compensation on the understanding that I received an apology from the person who had denied the bank had received the letters.

I received the money but never did get the apology.
