The General Chat Thread (2025)

Did you notice there are no hints of yellow sun poking out from behind clouds? It's seriously dismal here in winter :(
 Here too, we've had the longest recorded stretch in history without sunlight in our country. It's been grey and rainy for 4 straight months here.

I've been thinking for the last few days that I wasn't getting any email alerts from CB to say someone mentioned you or that I've got a DM...

I kept thinking it was odd no one else had mentioned it.

This afternoon I finally realised why. I was in the wrong email about. All my personal stuff goes into one about and is forwarded to another. CB goes into the other directly. fits which one i was in. :banghead:

One less thing to worry about it not working! Lol

Cold weather coming - that’s -20C to -26C on Wednesday and -18C to -23C on Thursday.

I as teenager I had old mini’s, they were the wettest car you could own. If it was pouring with rain there was a good chance it wouldn’t start. It was common to place a tarp under the bonnet (hood) over the engine.
Depending on the temperature and the humidity you had to adjust precisely how far out you pulled the choke, depressed the accelerator and left the ignition engaged before turning. You got one go at it. Mess it up and you were done for at least half an hour, maybe the rest of the day 😂
Anyways I was trying to get to the bit where because it was so wet if the temperature dipped the locks and doors would freeze solid and you were going nowhere!
Loved them to bits. Still do.

I cracked on the crockery thing. I like the rustic chunky orange stuff but I just can’t imagine wanting to use it for everything.

I’ve put it out on the side for everyday use as intended and ordered some plain white fine bone china from Royal Worcester for the times when bright orange isn’t the right vibe.
I decided not to wait as they’re having a 50% off sale plus an extra 10% if you sign up to their mailing list.
Got £652 quids worth of china for £244 so it was a no brainer really.

I was surprised how relieved I am, then I realised I’ve been using the tide me over jungle book stuff while I dithered since June 2021!

Given these are their long term pieces you can top up I’ve probably just purchased the last crockery of my lifetime which is a really weird thought!

At those temps my truck doors freeze shut...

(Really.)
I've camped wild in -20°C and it wasn't the vehicle that froze but everything in it. Frozen tinned baked beans, frozen toothpaste not coming out of the tube, methylated spirits too slushy to light, winter gas would burn but couldn't produce enough heat to boil water. I ended up buying a pressurised multifuel stove.

Luckily our sleeping mats were -30°C proof and our sleeping bags are 5 season (-40°C), so we were plenty warm enough. I do recommended picking up the courage to urinate elsewhere though. The bowl I chose was frozen by the morning and it looked more like a fried egg. Water was ice, but the urine side of things had concentrated into the centre as it froze. Poached or fried eggs have never quite looked the same since!

I'll take the cold please.
Same here! I just went out for a walk, but I had to turn around - the wind has picked up, and it’s currently 4F/-15C windchill, and walking into the wind…even with my face wrapped up in a scarf, and a winter hat on, it was instant severe ice cream headache. 😖
