The General Chat Thread (2025)

I touch type in British English, not Australian which has been causing fun and games on our home laptop. I've set the keyboard language to UK British but the actual keyboard is US... the result is that I can write my passwords down for my OH and he still can't log on to my laptop because I automatically change the location of certain keys in my head, whereas he hunts for them on the keyboard... :giggle:
I have some keys that have the letters/symbols worn off so they're blank. This caused my sister some difficulty when she came to visit and needed to use my computer. I had assumed because she worked for the government for so long and used computers at work she wouldn't need to look.

I genuinely thought everyone used qwerty, I realise now that’s pretty funny 🤣
Qwerty is the most common keyboard layout- it comes from typewriters, and typewriter keyboards are laid out that way because it would prevent the little arms from hitting each other.

There are lots of other keyboard layouts though - my husband is actually a non-qwerty user, he uses a layout called dvorak. It’s a really good layout for preventing repetitive strain injuries. He started to have some mild wrist pain, and he’s someone who types for a living. So he switched to dvorak and the problem went away. He now swears by it, although it took him some time to learn.

We have separate laptops, and I pretty much never use his because I need him to un-dvorak the keyboard first!

Had a scheduled dental appointment this morning (cleaning only), but we’ve not been plowed yet, so we can’t get out of our driveway, so I had to call and cancel.

Next available appointment…May 20th. Yikes!

Cancelling a dental appointment would make me happy 😂

I love dental cleanings. It's the other stuff I don't like.
I’m the same way, it’s like a back-scratch for my gums.

You know that pokey bit they do every so often, where they jab that little pick thing all along your gumline, and say things like, “2…2.2…2…,” measuring whatever it is they measure?

Yeah, I always ask at every appointment, “Am I getting the pokey thing this time?! Am I?! Am I?! I WANT THE POKEY THING!!!”

It's measuring pockets to see how much density you've lost. I don't like the pokey thing...I find that part uncomfortable. I'd hate being a dental hygienist, btw.

When I was working, we quickly found out that we had to have 2 computers because the letters wore off quickly with me, so Craig couldn't type since he used the hunt and peck method.

Yes, my DH also hunts and pecks. He generally uses just his index fingers to type. He's always had his own computers. He'd be quite mystified if he had to use mine!

I feel for you.

After yesterday's low cloud all day, by which i mean we were in it all day, I'm leaving both the windows and blinds open so the house gets warmer and I get to see a little sunshine today.

English keyboard do, but there are subtle variations in them. If you were to turn on a US qwerty keyboard, you'll find additional characters are in different locations. Typical ones in different places are the ", @, #, and a few others. All my passwords contain special characters as they are known, so it's a problem. Great security features apparently!

The special characters on the keyboards I use are in different places. I find it irritating!

Lucky you! This time of year we don't get much sun. I mean maybe 7 times in 2 months, no exaggeration.
