Classic grilled cheese and tomato soup. I used cheddar, Swiss and muenster for this one.

Looks very good - hard to beat tomato soup and grilled cheese.

What’s going on there with the bread…it seems like the top slices are turned opposite the bottom slices?

What is this about tomato soup and toasted chees sandwiches?
I've seen it a couple of times now and it's not a combo that I am familiar with.
I can see it work, but I would eat tomato soup with bread (toast, baquette, roll), or a toasted sandwich. Not together

Every culture’s different, I suppose, but here, that’s about as classic a combination there is - it hits all the notes on comfort and nostalgia.

It’s absolutely iconic here - there are whole ad campaigns around tomato soup and grilled cheese, and even at least one restaurant chain dedicated to it (Tom & Chee). Legend says it became popular with American soldiers during WWII, but that may be some revisionist history, I don’t know.

I've eaten it ever since I can remember. It was a treat and also a feeling poorly meal. In fact, I just had half a can of Campbell's tomato soup and a grilled cheese using Kraft cheese (which is not a real cheese, but a dairy product) a few night's ago because I wasn't feeling great and didn't want to cook anything, but some old time, simple comfort food. Not the greatest meal by any means, but it worked that night.

Here’s a funny thing - I have a copycat recipe of Campbell’s tomato soup because when you’re not feeling well, or you’re down for one reason or another, and you want that comforting tomato soup and grilled cheese, it has to be Campbell’s condensed tomato soup from a can. Nothing else will do.

If MrsT weren’t feeling good and asked for tomato soup and I gave her some from-scratch thing made with the ripest tomatoes and freshest ingredients…she’d rather have the Campbell’s, as would most Americans, I’d wager, so that’s why I have the copycat - so I can make Campbell’s tomato soup when I don’t have any Campbell’s tomato soup!

Speaking of tomato soup and grilled cheese, a lot of people dunk their sandwich in the soup and eat it that way. I do that on very rare occasions, but my hang up about foods touching or not being eaten in the same bite, unless they are supposed to be eaten together, which I wasn't even aware of until someone on a food forum pointed out due to my plating, interferes with that.

I'll take that from scratch stuff, please. I don't like tomato soup but I'd bet your homemade version would change my mind. My oldest daughter loves that combo and I haven't bought Campbell's tomato soup since she grew up and moved out!

My oldest daughter does that.

Me too.

Why was this thread moved? It was what I had for dinner, shouldn't it be in the "What did you cook or eat" thread?
