Then, out of the blue last week, an Amaryllis lily poked its head above the ground. This one was just two flat, green leaves for most of the year. Suddenly, there are 6 there. A really beautiful flower, native to South America.
Stunning. Here are some of the orchids that always flower at this time of the year.
The first is a Cattleya - The Venezuelan national flower. Exquisite perfume.
The second is a Dendrobium aggregatum. These were my mother-in-law's, and last year, I pulled them off the fern trunk they were attached to and gave them a bit more room, on 6 trunks instead of 1.
the 3rd and 4th are probably dendrobium, but I can't for the life of me find their proper names. Anyway, they flower once a year, for about 10 days, and then the babies appear, attached to the stalks. I've got hundreds of them.
The last one - again, a dendrobium, but this one has been carefully nurtured back to life after my 18 month absence in 2022-23. View attachment 127186View attachment 127187View attachment 127188View attachment 127189View attachment 127190
They sure have! I'm growing the Sugar Baby variety which are really sweet and supposed to be refrigerator/personal size at around 6 to 8 lbs. Last year ended up with around 320 lbs. and gave them all away since they didn't fit in the fridge...Barriehie save me acoupla watermelon, those have gotten so expensive!!
It'd probably be wasted here. The temperatures have gone bonkers: last week it was sort of 25-27C, and all of a sudden, it's 32C at 12 o 'clock. I water the plants at 8am, and by 10.30, all the water has evaporated. Add to that, we haven't had a drop of rain since January.Found a cool soil temperature chart that indicates optimum temperatures for germination and planting of various fruits and vegetables.
Ground temps don't fluctuate nearly as much as air. A thermometer 5 cm in the ground and averaged between AM and PM will get you your numbers. There's always the right way, the wrong way, and another way. It'd probably be wasted here. It's been around 32C (90F) most of this week.
However, that's in the shade. If you're in direct sunlight, that's about 8C (16F) hotter.
