What did you cook or eat today (April 2025)?

An orange Tompouce, the Dutch word for millefeulle. A tradition on the Kings Birthday.

I'm not fond of either (tompouce & oranjebitter)
I'll just have a beer later on.
I'm giving this years party in the capital a miss
I'll miss the herring & bitterballen though.
Maybe I make some vlammetjes for my beer snack
I dislike herring and oranjebitter, love bitterballen, vlammetjes and tompoucen. But I think in the light of my plans for this year, having both bitterballen and a Tompouce was a bit too much. Hope you will have a good time anyway!

Just slightly off topic, and also Windigo too, regarding herrings; best I ever ate were in Amsterdam. Raw, whole, amazing. Eating them made me able to imagine what it was like to be a penguin...

Anyway, I wonder if you think there are any jarred brands that are worth getting that come close to tasting like the ones you can buy from the street vendors in Netherlands?

I don't think so, I don't like them but my husband LOVES herring, and he says he doesn't want the jarred kind because it doesn't come close unfortunately.

Never seen them jarred, although I remember dad one time coming home with a small bucket of them. They still needed cleaning. No idea where he got them from. Probably a wholesaler.

We had a 3-4 p.m. pick up window for water at BJ's, a big, bulk, discount warehouse club everything store that requires paid membership for those not in U.S., so went out for an early dinner. Went to Big Bear Brewing Company, a gastropub type place. Not one of their beers, but they had Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, so I got 1. I don't like many beers, but I love this one because the Ale is stored in old Bourbon barrels so picks up that flavor, and even some color. That's water in the glass next to the Ale.

Craig wanted the pretzel stick appetizer. There were 3 breadsticks. I forgot to take picture until we'd both had some. Sauces are a beer/cheese fondue and a beer/German mustard. Pickles were gherkins, but not as sweet as they normally are. We'll get that appy again.

We both got burgers, but I totally forgot to get pictures. Mine was a black and blue. Per menu, it comes with Cajun blackening seasoning, as well as bacon, but I order without them, and skinny fries that are hand cut and actually good, not leathery like they come out at some places. Craig got a burger too, but I don't remember which kind.

Big Bear is a sure thing for a good meal out if anyone is traveling and comes across one.
