As somebody who has been to 20 different countries, I would have to say that 19 of them have people in tourist areas who can speak English. Itā€™s a bit arrogant of me to be surprised that this is not the case in Panama. Usually, this just means it takes a little longer to communicate what you want. In this case, I ended up getting something different than what I ordered. But, it turned out to be a very good thing.

We opened with Aguadito Especial de Mariscos, a soup made with egg, peas.
, cilantro, shrimp, and tiny squid:

We also had fried cevicheā€¦yes, thatā€™s right: beautiful sea bass ceviche is fried to make terrific nuggets of flavor:

The picture I took was only half the servingā€¦my wife ate the other half before I could get a picture.

I ordered something different than what I ended up getting (that pesky language barrier!), but what I got was incredible. It was a massive bowl loaded with tender calamari rings, langoustines, tiny squid, mussels, and shrimp. The broth was a delicate mix of white wine and garlic. Note the pyramid of rice in the background:

My wife got something similar, with more of a tomato sauce base:

I really want to figure out how to recreate these. Any guesses on what these dishes might be called?

The setting was really beautiful, in the old town area of Panama City:

We were out for most of the day ... more doctor's appointments for DH that took much longer than excepted, plus he still is not allowed to drive, so ...

I went freezer diving and came up with frozen ready to heat `n eat Chicken cordon bleu, leftover roasted Potato wedges and then put on a pot of mixed frozen vegetables.
Not bad actually.
Ice Cream later :whistling:

Panamanian cuisine has two classic fish "soups" - Guacho de Mariscos and Sancocho de Mariscos. A guacho is like a hearty stew made with "mariscos" (seafood) and rice. A sancocho is a thinner, soupy dish where all the ingredients are cooked in seasoned water. Typically, a sancocho would have loads of veg in it (potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam, taro root, corn, carrot, onion, culantro and the seafood). Sancocho is popular all across Northern S America and is often made with fish - chopped up and added to the soup, heads and all!

Just a case of finishing off the avocado & coconut soup with brown basmati rice, adding some extra protein, removing the additional protein hubby had failed to spot in the broccoli and eating some of the broccoli I harvested on Friday, minus the overcooked caterpillars hubby failed to notice. Yeah, I know extra protein and all that but they were well and truly overdone and I'm not certain what the calorie count is for them. I don't think they are in MyFitnessPal.

Yeah, thought not. Mostly it is the sweet & sour caterpillars (or gummy worms), but there is an entry for dried caterpillars but the calorie count seems a little on the high side and these were very definitely hydrated...

And no, I've no idea what cheese and ham caterpillars are either.

PS, it's a kids ready meal of "twirly" pasta, tomatoes, cheese and ham...

Went out with a friend who has a very traditional palate, so to an non adventurous Dutch restaurant.
My husband had a freshwater prawn sandwich, I had fried prawn croquettes. No pic of mine because it was very plain. We had fries on the side.

Food was fine but nothing I can't do at home.

I love bacon and corn kernel pancakes/waffles.

That pancake is beautiful, but Iā€™d ask for a plain one with bacon on the side.
