Skyline for lunch:
My guess is it comes from Coney Island, which was/is famous for its chili sauce-topped hot dogs, so much so that a chili sauce-topped hot dog is frequently referred to as a coney dog/coney, whether you're anywhere near Coney Island.I'd probably have one of the burritos.
What's the derivation of the word coney? I've always known coney to be another word for rabbit.
Yeah, we have Skyline here, too. I have never eaten there in the 21 years I have been in Ohio. I still can't wrap my head around putting chili and cheddar on top of pasta and I am not a fan of hot dogs, either...obviously they have other types of food there, but it's similar fare to anywhere else (other than the danged Cincinnati pasta covered in chili, LOL). So if for some reason family and friends want to go there one day and I get dragged along, at least I know I can get a salad. Did anyone else think it was weird to put cheddar cheese on pasta (on the kid's menu, kid's p'sghetti--it's JUST pasta and cheddar. That's all). But I would eat those York peppermint patties. Yum.
I just learned something new, didn't know coney was associated with rabbit. I wonder if that's where Coney Island (NY) got it's name? Maybe once upon a time it was overrun by rabbits?I'd probably have one of the burritos.

That is indeed hot sauce. Skyline sells Cincinnati chili, which isn't chili you eat out of a bowl, but use to top pasta and hot dogs, and it has a sweeter Greek/North African taste - I do not like it at all, and always get my coneys minus the coney sauce ("wiener bun" in the local lingo).Yeah, we have Skyline here, too. TastyReuben I like how you always take such nice photos of the menu, and the Skyline story is cool, thanks for sharing that. What did you put on that oyster cracker? Looks like honey but I am going to guess it's hot sauce.
After reading a bit, there is no consensus on how Coney Island got its name - it could be named after a Dutch family of settlers, a Native American tribe, or rabbits.I just learned something new, didn't know coney was associated with rabbit. I was just reading articles about it before you posted that. Turns out that there was a large population of wild rabbits on the island and it's believed the Dutch settlers gave it the name from the Dutch word for rabbit (konijn). The term 'coney' has more to do with the original English settlement in New York and their name for a rabbit.
Well you do live much closer to Cincy than I do (I think we are like 4 hours NE of Cincy). I could eat crackers and hot sauce. Thanks for the tip, I know what I can do while waiting for my salad!Skyline is pretty much its own religion here, and like any religion, there are the sacraments that must be practiced, like any other religion, and one of those is devouring a little bowl full of oyster crackers, each topped with a drop of hot sauce, while you await your order.
Supper tonight was a cheeseburger, cooked smashburger style in a cast iron pan. Some pan fried onions and deli American cheese (not the stuff in the plastic wrappers), dill pickle slices, and mayo on a bakery roll.
My house smells like a burger joint. I'm okay with that.

Edited to add that I had forgotten part of NYC was originally called "New Amsterdam" (part of Manhattan).
Anyone watch the movie Gangs of New York with Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis?
I went to NYC once, only to Manhattan. I took my mom and my sister, it was my mom's last trip before she died and she had always wanted to see the statue of liberty, so we did. And the Museum of Natural History, Central Park, and Grand Central Station...but we didn't have enough time to visit the Empire State Building.
My nails used to split and I started taking collagen formula in the form of bone broth protein and haven't had any problems with them in several years. I am sure you could make your own bone broth, there are all kinds of recipes for it online. The key ingredient is apple cider vinegar which leaches all the good collagen proteins from the bones. It's time consuming, however, and you also have to have room to store it in your refrigerator and freezer. It will only keep so long. My mom used to take gelatin for her nails, so basically the same concept, but she made hers out of a powder mix kinda like my bone broth protein powder but mine is drinkable and doesn't turn into a gelatinous substance. I have a friend who takes a formula called "skin, nails, and hair" that works pretty well for her and her hair sure has gotten long and shiny.I actually have to protect my nails,as they split.
And am taking vitamins supplements...View attachment 64887
Well I want to come to New Zealand, so...I too want to visit there.
