Some stuffed pasta shells with riccota and spinach in a tomato sauce from frozen tomatoes from last year's harvest...the greens are from the garden and that tomato is the only one that grew out of a plant I had in the basement...

I live and learn! I wonder about the origin of that combo? Apple sauce and pork is common in the UK (as you know) but chicken and apple sauce is not something I've come across.
It comes from a cooking school for young poor ladies that made menus focussing more on health than taste or pleasure. They considered this a healthier kids menu due to the addition of ( unsweetened) apple sauce.

Those institutions are the reason Dutch food has such a bad name, before they were created we had a rich and diverse culinary heritage due to the spice trade. But the household schools were based on Calvinism which considers spice to be sinful and promotes bland cooking . The entire generation of my grandparents grew up on those bland meals.

The household schools have dissapeared since the 1970's, and since then our food culture has much improved. But some things remain, like this childrens birthday meal.

Last nights dinner was excellent. The oven came into it's own. Somehow the heat remains consistent on each shelf, there is no flavor transfer in between shelves and it cleans splatter as you go. I used the grill out of interest to brown the wings. It can be just a grill or a grill + a top fan.
Spicy chicken wings, baked potato, cabbage and carrot vinaigrette slaw. Pud Strawbs

Mcds tonight so I had a kiwi burger, with Beetroot and an egg. Ordered fries but the guy on the mike I couldn't understand, I didn't know my wife spoke Swahili so she ordered . Crispy wrap for her including fries and s drink.
I told the guy when getting food at next window I don't understand Swahili . He just passed the meal, over. Got home and my fries were non existent. I don't understand putting a guy that doesn't speak English taking orders.

A mate went to the newly opened Immigration Office just down the road (instead of a 50km drive). He managed to find the correct office in a massive complex although all signs were in Thai. I would think that about only 5% of folks who would visit Immigration would be able to read Thai.

Fascinating. And do kids these days like the birthday meal with unsweetened apple sauce?

Yes, otherwise the song would not exist. It was created by the kids of my generation, and they (30+ of age now) still feed their own nostalgia foods to their kids. It's a standard feature on kids menus. It's all a matter of what you are used to.

the name of the group is 'kids for kids' and their song is : chicken, fries and apple sauce. Warning, very much 80's content ahead

The song is about how the children hate their parent's 'exotic' cooking, and how much they long for this birthday combo.
