What did you cook or eat today (March 2025)

Well that lamb I cooked was terrible. I am really mad at Aldi. It had a "use by or freeze" date of March 20 on the package. I thought it smelled a little odd when I was putting it in the marinade, but lamb can be kind of gamey smelling sometimes, so I rinsed it before putting it in the marinade. But while it was cooking it smelled really funky, and I cut off a tiny piece after cooking to try just to be sure (my allergies have been really bad with all the pollen past couple of days and my smell is off) and I quickly spat it out. I couldn't get that taste out of my mouth for quite awhile after and I ended up not eating any dinner (DH ate the mashed potatoes and peas).

I am heading up there shortly to get a refund. I am glad I have my receipt and I saved the packaging and the meat (I put it in a restaurant to-go container), though I had to triple wrap that to-go package in plastic grocery bags it to keep it from stinking up my fridge. ARRRGH! I buy produce, dairy, etc. from there regularly but I have never bought their meat before. And I never will again.

Well, that’s a shame that happened - it reinforces my habit of not buying lamb here, because I know it doesn’t turn over very quickly in the stores, and there have been cases of stores repackaging and relabeling meats (although I don’t think ALDI packages any of their meat in-store…but I’m still wary).

I’ve had pretty good luck with the meat I’ve bought there, from sausages to chicken (whole and pieces) to pork (ground, shoulder, and chops) and steak. They may not always have been best quality (specifically, I’ve gotten tough pork there before and gristly beef), but never anything spoiled. That would definitely put me off.

While there are some fresh produce items I’ll buy there, I have less luck overall with that - rotten apples, rotten potatoes, rotten tomatoes, slimy green onions, etc. Kroger…their produce is usually underripe by comparison.

Yeah, I am just glad DH didn't eat any of it and I am glad I didn't swallow it. Don't need us to be throwing up from food poisoning. And the lamb was vacuum sealed like most of their other meats (yes I am sure it's not packaged in store, pretty sure nothing is).

Our Aldi has really great produce most of the time but I have run into a few issues here and there with moldy berries, but their dairy (mostly cheese) is just fine and sometimes awesome, especially for the price.

I buy lamb from Wild Fork flash frozen and delivered on dry ice and it's wonderful. Other than that, I have only ever bought it from Meijer's, usually rack of lamb and it's cryovaced. I may be off lamb for awhile no matter where it's sold just because of last night. Eventually I may turn to a small farm about 20 miles from here that sells it. Eventually.

That’s what I did the single time I cooked domestic lamb - my SIL was selling cut flower arrangements at their farmers’ market, and she struck up a friendship with one of the farmers selling there, and he gave her two pounds of ground lamb, and she gave it to me, because she didn’t know what to do with it (and had never eaten lamb before), so I made shepherd’s pie and had her and my brother over for that.

ALDI - main things I buy there are dairy (though not milk), bacon, eggs, popcorn, crackers, nuts, olives, condiments, and some specialty German things from time to time.

We don't use milk because we don't eat cereal and never drink it, I only buy it for recipes and mostly I just get buttermilk (from Walmart since Aldi doesn't sell it). Yeah, I had bought ground lamb from there before and used it in spag sauce (along with Italian sausage and ground beef). I browned it before adding it to the sauce and it smelled great, no issues at all. The lamb I have bought from Wild Fork and Meijer is Australian lamb. I really don't know where Aldi sources theirs.

Sorry to hear you are not well.
So what does pippi get to eat when you have tomato soup?
Inquiring minds want to know :scratchhead:
Pippi is really empathetic so she didn't eat the first night and when I had the soup she had her honey roasted ham, some beef jerky, and some moist kibble with hotdog juice. 👍

I'll check with my cousin who lives in Queensland and a butcher but I think ozzy lamb is grain fed whereas ours is pasture fed. Different tastes.

This company Wild Fork has both grass fed and grain fed Australian lamb, just like in the USA you can find both grain fed and grass fed beef (along with grass fed grain finished).

Went to the bar on the lake for an early dinner. I had a fish sandwich and DH has a bacon cheeseburger.

It was getting late after my cake experiment, so I just threw chicken peppers onion tomatoes and herbs in the air fryer, finished it off with some spinach, pasta, philadelphia lightest soft cheese and some green tabasco
