We have a reference for the people who remove dead wood from the roadside... human termites. (It's illegal but it doesn't stop them turning up with trailers, chainsaws and full protective gear and filling up their trailer as quick as they can before escapement scarpering with $200 or more of wood per load. )

Depends on what type of wood. Oak, hickory, pecan, fruit wood, etc. certainly wouldn't be considered trash.

What I meant was that I don't think it is prohibited to pick up deadwood from the ground in most places.
