He was much older, so I don't know how deeply into urban slang he was. I always took it to mean more like a wooden barrel, like you put your stuff in the barrel, now it's in the barrel and you know where it is, so you can work on it. You've got it gathered up.Did he mean the barrel of a gun or a whisky barrel?
Edit: Just looked it up. Apparently 'in the barrel' means an unpleasant task in urban slang.

However, the way he used to bark out "You're in the barrel...GO!" - that always made me laugh, because he said it like a definite challenge, like, "You're up, and you better tell me something I want to hear!"
I used to sit in meetings and write down on my notepad all the stupid jargon I heard, just to keep myself amused.
That's a lot better than my story. I was dragging the trash bin back from the end of the driveway yesterday afternoon, looked across my yard and saw a 🤬 skunk, in broad daylight, looked again and saw a second one diving into the brush line! What are you? Was my first thought.
I realized and later google checked, it was a baby owl.💙

I think I posted a pic over the winter of a skunk eating birdseed off our back patio in the middle of the night. We always picked the same campsites, and there was always a skunk that lived in a hole in the ground near the campsite.

Skunks are usually nocturnal, which is why seeing two of them at 6PM really shocked me. They're usually not a bother and the only time they spray is if you surprise them and they feel trapped. Apparently, skunks know they can bring the goods when they want to, and it makes them fairly bold, but they're also pretty calm, for the same reason.
I'm not terribly bothered by it, though I'd prefer they go elsewhere.
