Whatcha drinking (2024)?

I am a big fan. I also really like Port Charlotte Heavily Peated. Both are pretty good, but they don't compare at all to Lagavulin 16!
Lagavullin is divine; sort of a perfect match between the smoky peat and the whisky.
Port Charlotte didn't even exist when I was there in Islay; Caol ila was closed down and the only distilleries were Ardbeg, Lagavullin, Bowmore ( we stayed right across the road), Laphroaig, Bruichladdich and Bunnahabbain.
At a scotch tasting some time ago, I found out that Lagavullin is one of the single malts used in Johnny Walker Black Label.

Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg are probably three of my favorites. I love cask strength Laphroaig. I can't ever find it locally.

I have a Nick Offerman special of Lagavulin. It is finished in a rum cask. Its ok. For the price, I would rather have lag 16

When we were on Islay (almost 10 years ago now!) we attended the 200th anniversary dinner for Lagavulin - it was pretty epic.

We went to Feis Ile, which is the annual festival on the island - we were there for 10 days, visited 8 distilleries, attended 22 events, and my poor liver still hasn’t forgiven me but man was it awesome. I’m trying to convince my husband to do it again since it has been 10 years.

My scotch cabinet is full of Islay malts - I’m quite partial to Ardbeg, Lagavulin, and Bowmore.

Made cherry liqueur old-fashioneds, and I think it’s my new favorite recipe for that venerable cocktail, as it requires no muddling of sugars and fruit…three ingredients, plus the garnish, and it’s delicious (and quite strong).

Speaking of spirits from Islay, I’ve currently got negronis chilling that I made with this gin:

A glass of red which I usually avoid because it gives me a whopping headache but I realised that’s probably the sulphites and as this ones ‘no added sulphites’ I’m risking it!

In common with a lot of organic no added sulphite wine it really benefits from having a long time to breath before consuming.

Kahlua, Baileys, Gran Marnier

I forgot that I've made Kahlua this year. I have to remember where I put it; adds to the aging process that way(the Kahlua)... 🤔

We were gifted a bottle of homemade Kahlua. We don't drink Kahlua. I am not sure what to do with it. Suggestions are welcome :)
There’s a lot you can do with Kahlua. I know you said you don’t drink it, but it’s great in hot chocolate, and it’s good to pour a little over ice cream.

An excellent flavoring agent for whipped cream, cake frostings, anything you’d bake with chocolate, it’s good for that. Good in chocolate fudge.

It’s also used more than you’d think as a marinade and in savory sauces…I’ve seen more than one ribeye recipe that uses Kahlua… :whistling:
