I just thought. My sandwich maker (Sharpe) suggests that. I do not.

I've never even looked at the instructions for mine (Breville). It is non-stick so I guess not, but seeing as it is about 18 years old I don't suppose it would make much difference after all this time.

The waffle maker I recently bought which converts to a sandwich maker suggests brushing oil on the non-stick surface. It does make the outside 'crispier'.
