food

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Historically, humans secured food through two methods: hunting and gathering and agriculture. Today, the majority of the food energy required by the ever increasing population of the world is supplied by the food industry.
Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies like the International Association for Food Protection, World Resources Institute, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Food Information Council. They address issues such as sustainability, biological diversity, climate change, nutritional economics, population growth, water supply, and access to food.
The right to food is a human right derived from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), recognizing the "right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food", as well as the "fundamental right to be free from hunger".

The Dutch food thread, because Dutch food isn't so bad as its reputation.

So I decided to make a thread about Dutch food, because internationally there are so many misconceptions about it. Supposedly our food is bland, repetitive and uninteresting. Talking about Dutch food usually conjures up images of cheese, potatoes, sad vegetables and mashed potatoes. Maybe if...

    Common Food Myths

I've always been fascinated by culinary history. It's an area where almost anything goes, and just when you think you've got an answer, there's a U-turn and everything goes haywire. An "authentic" dish is, surprisingly, not even close to "authentic" because it was (a) invented in another country...

Recipe Exploring the Perfect Pairing: Roti and Lunu Miris (Sri Lankan Traditional Food)

Food is not just about sustenance; it's about culture, tradition, and the pleasure of indulging in flavors that transport us to distant lands. In Sri Lanka, one such culinary delight is the combination of roti and lunu miris. These two elements come together to create a combination taste that...

My food processor is pissing me off

I'm trying to shred cabbage to make homemade coleslaw and the feed tube is ridiculously narrow on this. Literally every other food processor I've seen has a much wider mouth on it. By the time I cut the pieces small enough to fit in the feed tube, I might as well just do it all by hand. WTH...

    Coronation Food

Rather than continuing the Easter thread, I thought I'd start a new one. I doubt we'll be doing anything....we're going to be on holiday somewhere (probably northern Italy). Somehow we seem to always miss the big royal events.....usually by design thanks to the extra bank holidays they give us...

The Official Food and Music thread

Okay, I came up with this weird idea that music can inspire cooking, and cooking can inspire music. This isn't necessarily about songs with food in the name, but that's okay, too. It can simply be about what music gets you in the mood to cook, or what kind of food gets you in the mood for music...

    Food budget thread

I just saw a Facebook post of a woman on a frugal cooking group I follow that said she had set herself a goal of spending no more than a 1000 pounds total this year on food despite this years crisis. She's a budgeting expert, mind you. But it did inspire me to create this thread to share our...

    Food Abominations

If you like food and you want to enjoy it you need to keep an open mind right? Sometimes a combination or product appears that just makes your body revolt at the very thought of it. Food Fraud...

I watched a rather eye-opening video, and thought I'd share it. It was about food fraud in America, but if is happening here, it is happening everywhere.-- it mentions the UK horse-meat scandal as one example. Here is the video, and below it a link to an article from the same source for those...

Why do we like the food we like?

I follow a lot of channels on Youtube that specialize in explaining why certain movies, songs, stories, video games, etc are so well loved. You could just dismiss that all as "Well its personal opinion", but that's a cop-out. Even accounting for personal taste, there are just some things that...

    Is fish-n-chips a finger food?

I had cajun fish-n-chips today (fried catfish and French fries). I eat fried fish with my hands, but I noticed two other diners eating the same thing with knives and forks. It got me wondering what other people do. I eat chicken fried steak with a knife and fork, but eat classic American fried...
