food

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells to provide energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Historically, humans secured food through two methods: hunting and gathering and agriculture. Today, the majority of the food energy required by the ever increasing population of the world is supplied by the food industry.
Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies like the International Association for Food Protection, World Resources Institute, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Food Information Council. They address issues such as sustainability, biological diversity, climate change, nutritional economics, population growth, water supply, and access to food.
The right to food is a human right derived from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), recognizing the "right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food", as well as the "fundamental right to be free from hunger".

Food Waste Challenge ~ September 2022

DH & I were chatting last night about Food Waste in our home. I don't think that I throw out very much food at all, but I could be wrong. So, with this said, I'm mainly starting this thread for myself, to keep track of what I'm wasting and how much it cost to purchase. Granted, the produce...

Things to do with a food processor?

I gave in and bought a food processor. I never had/used one before. I know you can make homemade mayo, but what are other things to do with a food processor? I want to get my money's worth.

    Food Shopping-Kroger Boost.

First, if this is not the appropriate forum I apologize. I didn't see a better place. Kroger has a new service called Kroger Boost. Basically you pay $60 per year and get free next day delivery on orders over $35. I am always pinched for time but I am also cheap. I decided to try it and think...

    Food saver system?

We are getting ready to have an abundance of fresh produce (particularly tomatoes) and I am interested in getting a food saver system (to freeze tomato sauce mostly) but really don't know which one to get. I would like to get one with reusable bags and maybe containers that work with the...

    What's Your Favorite Food Pairing?

Some foods work well together, and some foods don't. But, some foods are truly a match made in heaven. I'm thinking of this after ordering a steak sandwich at a restaurant I particularly like. I liked the sandwich, but when I brought half of it home, it occurred to me that I could make it...

    Would you eat this food?

Went to a family memorial service earlier. It was first at the burial ground and then back at the house with food etc. The food was picked up at 8am. People didn't come back until about 11am. Food was sandwiches. Tuna, smoked salmon, egg, cream cheese. There was no fridge space so the food was...

How do you do your weekly food shopping online?

I know this sounds odd but exactly how do you use the system your supermarket provides for online shopping (whether it is delivered or you pick it up from the store)? For instance, I always shop with a particular recipe in mind. So I might need aubergines, courgettes, red & green peppers and...

    Food History and Misconceptions

As I was writing an answer to Mountain Cat about French Fries, it got me thinking. Many foods, or food items we claim as our own... are not our own. We Brits will assure you that Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow, or Birmingham - when it was originally invented in Delhi and called...

    US Shortage of Baby Food?

When I started seeing the lamentations regarding people who felt that the shortages of baby foods would threaten starvation for their infants, I felt that old regret that so many people are so habitualized and manipulated that they don't even try to think for themselves. And there were for...

Food items you no longer buy

Are there are any foods you stopped buying? What were your reasons for no longer buying that item? In my case I stopped buying breakfast cereals. Do you ever complain or send food back in restaurants?

I have done both. Any examples? The most recent example I remember (which was a while back) was when I ordered a pizza with an egg broken on top. I stressed to the waiter when I ordered it that I wanted a runny yolk. And well... it wasn't. They got it right, after it got sent back.

Food or drink related New Year resolutions (2022)

Do you have food or drink related resolutions for 2022? My main one is a complete clear out of store cupboards and freezers. Its bonkers. I simply have too much stuff which is old and probably past using. In fact, its so bonkers that I'm not even sure what I have.
