Cryptic food and drink

Bison?
Oh... do you mean 'basin'? That's not fair! I was looking for a 'dish' as in a 'recipe' as I thought that was the unspoken rule.:) :D

I assumed that it was, but I wouldn't guarantee I know it. Most of our kitchen stuff comes from Home Bargains...
Think French. I haven't got any of this brand either except for a huge frying pan which I got from a charity shop at bargain price. Its way too expensive IMHO. But it is a well known brand.

By the simple expedient of putting "Le" into the tax avoider's search engine, we see the result. In truth, Vienna.

This means nothing to me...
Ah well.. I thought everyone interested in cooking would know of Le Creuset. But, in truth, you are not missing much. They are a bit of a middle/upper class affectation in my opinion. You could pay £150 for a casserole dish. I'm not keen on them as they are very heavy to lift and, I find, difficult to keep clean. I use good quality non-stick or stainless steel and sometimes an earthenware casserole dish. I think the brand became popular here in the late 60's/70's due to the rise in popularity of French and Italian food amongst the middle classes (Elizabeth David et al). They have a rustic French farmhouse look. At that time they were probably one of the only cast iron ceramic ranges available.

Strange as it may seem, an extract from an Elizabeth David cookery book formed part of a study I had to do when I studied linguistics.

Back on crossword clues, an alternative and apt clue to an item recently clued in this thread:
