My mother loved them. Absolutely loved them, and fruitcakes, and liver with onions, sardines and anchovies, and all kinds of foods that I didn't like. No wonder I was such a skinny kid!First time I had a mince meat pie, I expected it to be a minced meat pie. Nice little savoury snack.
Needless to say I was very disappointed.
It was sweet. Very sweet. Sort of so sweet you get worried about your dental bill.
Not a fan.

My mother made a good rum pound cake. I did like that one. They really don't need to be very sweet. I don't have a sweet tooth but I do like mince pies. I think I like the alcohol in them (the good ones). I've made them with unsweetened pastry and only a little sugar in the mincemeat filling. Its the spices, fruit and alcohol which are the stars.
Ahh - sorry - forgot about that! What? No butter?

have you ever tried vegan butter with pies? I never have.Never use anything else!
Whew. That's good.Butter is in the pie crust!
No. I'm mostly vegetarian, actually - as was my mum - but the only thing we never skimped on was butter. Plenty of it, on everything.have you ever tried vegan butter with pies? I never have.
Not vegan butter but you can use vegetable shortening such as Trex with good results. I've also used Tomor margarine which has a high fat content to make vegan croissants. See here What did you cook/eat today (August 2017)?have you ever tried vegan butter with pies? I never have.
Years ago when I was young and my mom had 6 kids at home, money was tight so she frequently used margarine in baking instead of butter. All of her pie crusts were homemade and made with either shortening or margarine, or maybe a combo of both, and they were flaky and delicious. Not vegan butter but you can use vegetable shortening such as Trex with good results. I'm sure vegan butter would work if it states it can be used in baking. I've a lot of experience cooking vegan as my son turned vegan...
Mu mum used margarine as well, although butter when it was available ( she went through rationing during, and after the 2nd World War). All of her pie crusts were homemade and made with either shortening or margarine, or maybe a combo of both, and they were flaky and delicious.
That just freaks me out that there is actually that much meat in it, or any meat at all, LOL. I mean I know that the jarred stuff has the suet in it, but does it have meat in it too?
Wow a mincemeat recipe that actually contains meat.
Wonder how that would go down today?!
