Plans for today (2019-2022)

This is a little crazy:

I have a few repairs around the house that I’d rather hire out. Like I’ve mentioned before, it’s damn near impossible these days to find an appliance repair person/plumber/electrician, unless you hire some faceless national chain, like Roto-Rooter.

Well, I have an appliance guy, but he’s hard to get a hold of. I finally got him to come out and fix the dishwasher. Done.

After finding a local plumber we’ve used before has closed up shop, I found another local place, so that’s the toilet sorted.

And the hardest of all…an electrician. I happened to see a local electrician driving around a few weeks ago, so I followed him and got his number off his car.

Texted him, he texted back, then disappeared for a month. Turns out, he had covid. He eventually texted me back, then came out to the house and gave me a very reasonable estimate for the work we need done, which includes a light over the kitchen sink (psyched over that).

One of the items I need is a post light out front replaced. He advised I buy my own light, so I could choose what I wanted, and we set a date for this morning to do all the work. Very excited!

Went out last night (and keep in mind, if I’m out past 6PM, I’m a very angry fellow) in search of a post light.

Lowe’s had…one light. By that, I don’t mean they had several of one style of post light. They had one single post light in stock, and it was way too big for what we’re replacing.

Drove 20 miles to Home Depot. They had twice as many lights…two. Unfortunately, both were non-wired rechargeable lights. Useless to me.

So today, I’ve been all over looking for lights. Thankfully, I’ve finally found a light, and I went ahead and bought four matching outside lights and am having those replaced as well.

I must say, I never expected, of all things in short supply, to find post lights in that category. I had to go to six places to find a post light, and no one had more than two styles in stock to choose from, and no one had more than one of each. The lights I bought today - I cleaned them out of that style, in both post and outdoor wall lights.

Do you ever look online before you bother driving all the way to a store? I'd be pretty ticked if I drove 20 miles to only find 2 of what I am looking for. And yeah, I know that calling the store is futile, it's really hard to get someone on the phone and then you never know if they are ill informed or don't care, or possibly knowledgeable, but who the heck wants to wait 20 minutes on the line to find out!

I'd say the same but I'd order it on-line anyway so I wouldn't be driving about...

Well, for the post light, I would want to see it in person. I hate getting things delivered and then having to return them, and here in the states, sometimes one has to pay for return postage. I think TR would be very cranky!

The problem with checking online, at least the times I’ve checked, is there’s no master filter to show what’s in stock at the store, it’s their entire online and store stock, all or nothing, and you have to click each item, then check if it’s in stock at “your” store.

I have less than zero patience for that, and I also don’t like to be presented with 547 lights that I have to weed through. If I have, say, five styles to choose from, I can make a decision from that. If I have hundreds, it’s overwhelming and I get frustrated and give up.

That would imply I have forethought.

In this case, he was here at 4:30PM yesterday afternoon, and agreed to work me in at 9:30AM today - no time to order online, and considering how hard these guys are to pin down, when he said he’d fit me in today, I was more than happy to get that done.

The electrician I called last year, that was in August and he was booked up through November - that’s what I’m trying to avoid.

My plan for today include going to fix my neighbours fence because she hasn't been able to get anyone to do it and her sheep have the ability to get out (but prefer to stay close to home, so if they do get out they do actually return home). We're also going to visit get grass trees that are centuries old.

I'm going to set another batch of Tempeh going. The first attempt failed. Sort of expected that because the recipe/guide I was following online didn't fill be with confidence once I started to compare quantities etc...

And I've got or evening meal to make, the chooks have a problem with their automatic door not opening properly. Luckily it's the bantam's house, so they actually can still get out but for how much longer is another matter. Then I've got to get the garlic planted another load of washing on and in still combing through some alpaca fleece so i can spin up some alpaca...

I'm not sure how a post lantern could be too big for your huge yard. :scratchhead:

That thing was bigger than a pumpkin - it was meant to go with a McMansion. Maybe I’m just used to the much simpler one that we’ve had.

Hoping to hear from the electrician today.

I like big lamps, I can not lie. 🎶

All three of the dusk-to-dawn lights in my backyard are fried. I need to replace them. I can do that myself. I have all the tools to do it safely.

I can do the post light, it’s pretty much just matching the wires up, but I don’t want to, and I already told him he could do it, as part as other work I want done. I’d feel bad if he came out and found the post light done.

Funny story…when he showed up, he was driving a little Pontiac Vibe. We talked about what I wanted done, just in general terms, and he gave me a rough estimate, which was lower than I expected. He saw my surprise, grinned a little, and said, “That’s because I don’t have to pay for an $80K truck.”

Later, when he popped the post light off, he thought it was just full of bugs, but I pointed out that the socket innards had all rusted out, and the mounting screws were rusted and barely holding the fixture on.

He pulled the fixture off, and then said, “You want me to just show you how to replace it? It’ll save you a few bucks.”

I said, “That’s why you don’t have an $80K truck…you’re giving away work!”
