Plans for today (2025)

I've got the blackeyed peas going (not the musical group) in the crockpot with some rendered bacon, a bay leaf and chopped onion. We are still trying to sort out breakfast (yeah it's 3:30 PM here), but it looks like leftover risotto and lobster with a fried egg on top. Sounds reasonable, right?

There's a football game on at 5, so I will putter around in the kitchen and make some nachos for half-time (I will make my special smoked turkey nachos with a slice of jalapeno, a slice of smoked turkey, a dollop of sour cream with monterey jack cheese on top, baked in the oven then topped with fresh salsa and homemade guac). I don't care that much about the game, really.

Later we will eat the pork roast, blackeyed peas, greens, and cornbread (after all dinnertime is usually around 10PM here). I never got the mustard greens so I will just do a small serving of sauteed spinach instead. I was thinking about making some mini rolls from scratch for little two-bite lobster rolls to snack on after the nachos, but that might happen tomorrow instead. I haven't decided yet.
I've got the blackeyed peas just done; cooked in chicken stock and bacon. For a textural crunch I'll add the finely diced red onions before serving.

The pork and sauerkraut is pretty much done, just waiting on the beets. Taste test proves it’s another success.

I have frozen crusty rolls from Kroger (La Brea brand), and I asked MrsT how many she wanted. Her response: “Just one…but set out two.” - I think that means two!
I'd do three with a whole block of that KerryGold butter on its own plate, right there...

I can relate. I brought the plate of deviled eggs (8) to the TV where DH was watching the game and set them on the table, and DH said, "I'm probably only going to eat 2 of those." He ate 1 and said, "Wow, these are really good." I ate 3. After his 2nd one I stood up and went to pick up the plate and he said, "Just leave those." The plate is empty. He ate 5.

Looks like pork roast will get cooked Friday and we are just snacking and having a bowl of black-eyed peas later, lol.

Today I’ll mostly be making sure Mr SSOAP sticks to hospital orders, he’s a shocker for trying to do far, far too much after anything medical.
It’s a bit of thing I’ve noticed mostly amongst men that they jump up in a kind of “I’m fine, I’m bouncing back, see I’m fit as a fiddle, nothing to be concerned about here!” way that’s detrimental to recovery.

I’ve already had to bring out the big guns - he’s had my sermon on how all these people have dedicated their lives, their time and energy into trying to fix a problem for you at huge expense so not doing the few simple things you’ve been asked to post op is really a little bit selfish, especially when a redo would be unlikely to work.
Not nice but had to be done 😬

So apparently today is a 5 hour filmathon for which he’d like popcorn, watermelon lollies and chicken wings!
Might have to send a son out for supplies cos if I go he’ll probably take up gymnastics while I’m out 😂

I cut veges etc for a batch of picalilli,
Got sourdough on the go. Just needing to stretch & fold a couple more times (the dough, not me)
Cooked up some tomatoes that were starting to deteriorate. No idea yet what I am going to do with them, but at least they will keep now
Made dog food as usual. Ate 2 boiled eggs and I'll probably make nasi goreng tonight with fried eggs :)
Ah, what else..
Harvested eggplant (1) and green beans (lots) and been not nice to the caterpillars on my small citrus trees (I killed them).
Now having a cup of tea

I'm going to try and finish weeding the garden this morning, and then transplant some Thai chiles, scotch bonnet chiles and chiltepin chiles into larger pots.
Found some okra/ladies fingers in the supermarket yesterday, so something Indian is definitely on the books.
And... I have to go to the supermarket because we haven't got any pasta.
