The CookingBites Recipe Challenge: Nov 2015-June 2017

I spoke to my Mum about rhubarb as I don't really cook puddings. She told me her recipe for rhubarb crumble which has ginger biscuits. I do remember eating it! I will try to post it here if thats ok.

Rhubarb can be used in savoury dishes too! But yes, we would love to see the recipe. Post it as a new thread in Baking, Bread Making and Cakes with the Recipe prefix. Then post a link to it back here in this thread. See the original post in this thread for detailed instructions.

Rhubarb, almonds and rose water Bircher (no idea why it is called Bircher, it's oatmeal) https://www.cookingbites.com/threads/rhubarb-rose-and-almond-bircher-muesli.8884/

I'll add my picture of it hopefully tomorrow.

I'm having trouble finding rhubarb. Its the forced kind at this time of year. Aldi normally stock it but not today!
What about frozen or tinned rhubarb? I know January is very early for fresh rhubarb as you indicate. this time in march would have been better in the UK for rhubarb I think, sadly.

But come on folks you don't need to have made it. I can only make 2 recipes with what I have available and one of the ones I wanted to, I can't make sure to the cost of rhubarb here!

Tinned I have, but its green so not much good if you want to photograph a pretty plate. It tastes good though. I haven't been able to track down frozen at all despite searching major supermarkets. Forced rhubarb is available from Ocado and Waitrose (sometimes) but is expensive. I paid £3.50 for a bunch. Aldi usually have it at a very good price but not at the moment for some reason.

Just checked Sainsbury's and they have forced rhubarb for £3 for 400g.

Most on sale in the stores in the UK is forced

Would be this time of year... are you saying that even in season they stocked forced?
probably because it gives the most tender shoots and that pink. Life goes green when exposed to sunlight!
But my rhubarb used to have some pink in it if picked earlier enough, however it was much thicker stemmed that the UK public (or at least when the supermarkets think the UK public) wants to purchase.
For me, the best rhubarb was the stuff you pick up from farmers markets to better still from stalls at the side of the road cycling through Yorkshire and Lancashire... :whistling:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhubarb_Triangle
"Rhubarb is a native of Siberia and thrives in the wet cold winters in Yorkshire. West Yorkshire once produced 90% of the world's winter forced rhubarb from the forcing sheds that were common across the fields there.

In February 2010, Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb was awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Commission’s Protected Food Name scheme after being recommended by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs(Defra)."

If it's straight & thin, it's forced. The way people want it!
