Windchill currently of 0F/-18C, and I'm about to go out for groceries, and combining that with my first (short) walk of the year.

There's a fine line between bravery and insanity...

That didn't last long. Even with an undershirt, a heavy button-down shirt, a very heavy sweater, and a proper winter coat, wind bit right through all that like it was nothing.

The worst part, though, was on the 12 square inches of my face that were uncovered. Before I could even get my cart and my bags out of the car, I had an instant ice cream headache.

I made it probably 200 feet (on an expected 1/4-mile walk), and said, "Nope, not happening today," turned around, went back to the car, and drove the rest of the way to Kroger.

Part of the problem is that the kind of high-tech clothing that will keep you comfortable in cold, windy weather is the kind of clothing that you probably wouldn't be caught dead wearing in public. It is stuff you get at sporting goods stores, and is made with synthetic materials, often in colors not found in nature.

I think I'm just getting old. I used to not even flinch at 0F temp/windchill. Now, it's more like, "Ouch! My hair is frozen!"

Yeah, I used to spend a week every year skiing in Colorado. It's not the cold that keeps me from doing it, it is the breakability of my body at 60. I have some good, cold weather gear, but if it is cold and ugly outside, and all I'm doing is running errands, it's not worth the effort to get geared up.

I have heated seats in my car and I'm the only one allowed to park in the garage. My efforts shopping involve a click on my mouse and a click to pop the trunk when I get to the store!

Don't you look dashing and snuggly all at the same time!)

That Missus T., she's a lucky gal.
Why thank you. You are obviously a woman of good sense and taste!

MrsT asked me if I was going out to beg for pennies or sweep chimneys: "Give us tuppence, guv'nah!"

The thing is, up here if you wear thermals and such then are in the store for 20+ minutes, you're sweating profusely because the heat is up high in the stores. Layered outerwear is a good idea, but still, where to put all the layers while shopping? Modern day problems.

Yeah, I had to grab a big cart, even though I bought only seven items. I had to have somewhere to stash my coat...and scarf...and hat...and gloves...
