My husband smokes, so he tracks stuff in from outside. I have soft rugs I have to shake out by the doors, a myriad of shoes to pick up and move out of the way, I have a lot of houseplants so I have to sweep up plant leaves/debris with a broom first, and then navigate around the dining room tables (I have 2) and chairs (moving the chairs, putting them back), moving kitchen barstools, rolling cutting island, then down a long hallway to guest bathroom, then bedroom and master bath, then putting everything back in order. And sometimes I go back through all the rooms and do it twice to make sure I didn't miss a spot!
I tell my gf I'll do the downstairs and she can do the upstairs..while she's up there, I'll turn on the vacuum and let it sit running for 10 minutes while I go on the internet..then I shut it off and put it away..
Just kidding..she's figured out my bs years ago..

This makes me grateful that I have a small house

We really need to downsize in the next 10 years or so. The youngest of our kids moved out over 7 years ago and we don't entertain like we used to, it's a lot. Yes I always wanted a big house, and it was great when I had 4 kids living at home with their friends over constantly, and we had big family parties.

My first house I owned in Florida was 800 sqft. Perfect for 1 person.

Ah - now you know why I go for the minimalist look! I've as little stuff as possible (including furniture) on the ground floor here. Hard wood flooring and one rug in the sitting room. Mind you, all the clutter is piled upstairs!

Whenever I watch those american home TV shows and see families buying 5 bedroom houses with 6 bathrooms and 3 living spaces, I always think to myself how is the couple going to live in that house once the kids are gone?

I'm sort of in that situation I suppose, though not as grand. My house is Victorian terraced and looks quite small from the outside. Inside there are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two downstairs rooms plus kitchen and also a basement which is properly 'tanked' so can be used as a games room, extra bedroom etc. None of the rooms are very large but (apart from the kitchen) they aren't small either.

The garden is incredibly long but only the width of the terraced house. Here is a google map photo from the street:

In this house, it depends who doors the hovering as to how long it takes. Hubby can do the entire house (1 floor 3 bedrooms, large sitting room, dining room, kitchen, laundry and mud room) in an hour. The same will take me all day. He hovers the floor space that id's immediately accessible. I move things, i hover under things like the bed, I hover and dust the bookshelves. He doesn't dust (I use one of the attachments). I'll hover the walls and the ceiling periodically (Australia is very dusty, not like the UK at all). If we don't do them at least once a quarter the cobwebs turn brown from the dust! And there's a spider population explosion this year!

Yeah, they don't, they downsize. But my living in a small home with loud children might have shortened their lives, so it was very important to have a big house at the time. I am guessing I am not the only parent short on patience who needed breathing room in order to save sanity.

And stairs are something to consider as one ages as well. That's another reason I would like to downsize, stairs are hard enough to navigate while drunk, much less elderly and tipsy! I don't want to fall down the stairs, that would be horrible!

I remember when we built the garage and the additional part of the house where he and I reside, he wanted to put the washer and dryer in the basement. I insisted that we build a laundry closet in the garage. That was nearly 20 years ago and I didn't want to haul baskets of laundry up and down the stairs. Thank goodness, I can't even imagine 10-20 years from now! He suggested a laundry chute. I pointed out I would still have to bring up clean laundry.

I am thinking ahead to a one level home at some point.

Finally all the electrical work in the kitchen is finished! I don't love how the kitchen looks and I still need to fix a couple small things, but I'm not willing to spend more money on this for now.

Your kitchen is cute. It looks like you could put up magnetic strips for knives if you wanted to, eventually. I wish I had enough room between my counter and cabinets to do that!

Thank you JAS_OH1 !

I love how the cabinets and the counters look, don't love the disposition and hate the floor tiles but I'm not touching them, the plumber says I have all the plumbing on the floor and redoing my plumbing would be worthless because the building's plumbing is old and anything that's on the building's pipes will go into my pipes anyway!

Btw I'm thankful I made the house all electrical, short term I'll be paying more but long term I believe this will payoff, gas is a fossil fuel whereas electricity can be made from a couple different sources.

You can always put down an area rug eventually to cover the tile. I saw an ad for one the other day that detaches from the backing and is machine washable. I hope it becomes a popular product that will be available in Portugal.

There are a couple options, including vinyl flooring which my aunt has installed in my grandma's home, but I don't like the look of any of the low cost options. I could always apply new tiles on top of these ones but, if I need to spend more than a couple €, I think I'd rather save the money, hopefully one day the building will get a new plumbing and then I can redo my plumbing and the kitchen as well.
