We paid £35,000.00 for our house in Cheshire in '85. When we divorced in 2001 it was valued at c. £500,000.00. As it was to be 100% hers, I advised her to sell it and buy something smaller. She didn't. Last I heard it was valued at £350,000.00.

Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I bought my land here in Thailand (1,600 sq m) for around £10,000.00 in 1999 and built the house on it for around £12,000.00 in 2000. House building. The land next door (almost the same size) was sold four years ago (without a house on it) for £58,000.00. (Based on exchange rates at the time).

Logic doesn't come into it.
Nice site,Yorky. Enjoyed looking through it and the stages of your house building. Thanks, for posting!

It's raining here ATM, but still about 20 deg c. Painter is here plastering wall where we extended the opening. Then re paint to match it all in.btw it's a car job, I pay everyone in cold hard cash. Everyone here does better prices for cash. I've always done deals for cash. However I feel the days of cash are nearing an end? We went decimal 10th July 67, I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember taking a 10 bob note to the shops to get change to see the new money.

Believe it or not, the whole "cashless society" thing is another extremist conspiracy theory around here, seen as another way for the government to monitor its citizens' purchases.

I'd welcome it. I hate cash.

Haven't heard of this before but then in out house, every day is chocolate day.
It's meant to signify all the boxed chocolates that go on deep discount the day after Valentine's Day. It's not unusual to see grocery store chocolates 75% off.

My wife was in supermarket on sat and she was going to get a bunch of flowers for our friends mums 90th. What we would normally pay $15 for a bunch were $60. She came back to the car and said I'm not paying that. I reminded her Sunday is Valentine's Day.
Massive mark up!! :(

Hello from the deep South. It is 3° F, or -16° C. About 5 inches of snow on the ground. The state of Texas has us on rolling outages for electricity, so I have electricity about 40 minutes on, and 20 minutes off, and cycles. Inside of my house is 60° F. But, I do have a fireplace for me and psycho poodle to hang out next to. Still no Internet, so I am posting from my phone.

WooHoo! We just hit 0°F. That is -18°C. I think that is a record low. I’ll have to check. The power just went off again, it should come on in about 20 minutes. This may be nothing to some people who live near the Arctic Circle, but it is very unpleasant in Texas.

That temperature would be ridiculously "unpleasant" here. The locals would be dying in droves!

This is one of those things I want to look back on and say, “Been there, done that, never want to do it again.”

If I wanted to live like this, I would’ve moved to Minnesota. This is normal February weather in Minnesota. They can keep it.

The arctic storm front in Texas has hit the news here too. Luckily the weather seems to settle by next week and you'll be having pleasant (Finnish summer) temperatures. Take care; I'm glad you've got psycho poodle as a (warming) companion!
