Coming from absolutely nowhere this evening I was watching a tv clips programne about 1982 and it had a section on the Hyde Park, IRA bombing of a mounted military band. 12 band soldiers and seven horses died. The drum horse Sefton was critically injured as the nails and bolts packed around the semtex car bomb ripped though his body. He was saved, patched up, and retired to a horse sanctuary on the edge of the village I lived in. I would see him in the field most weeks whilst I walked an elderly neighbours dog as a favour and pocket money earner. Tonight brought back the vivid memory of the massive scars in his flanks, and despite all he went though he finished his life as a placid, contented animal. I cried.
