We've had temps up to 70F of late, but today, Winter has come back with a "Remember me?" - 28F with 18F windchill.

Tiresome idiocy today. We needed a few things at the Co-op and, keeping to the instructions for people to shop on their own, take it in turns. It was Catherine's turn and just before she was about to go in, a group of three teenagers (without face coverings) marched into the shop. As she got to the door, they had gone all the way up the first aisle and then turned round and come back (it's supposed to be one-way). They then proceeded to barge out of the "in" door, almost knocking her out of the way.

"Morons," she said as they pushed past her. One of them stopped and turned, clearly about to respond. Catherine, in the calmest voice you've ever heard, said, "Don't even think about it unless you fancy wearing your nose inside out!" That put an end to that nonsense.

Shorts-and-T-shirt weather the other day; today...icicles:

Cheerful sights and sounds this morning; goldfinches, absent throughout the winter here, are back. Britain has few colourful birds, so it's always nice to see the bright reds and yellows of a goldfinch. It also helped that it's sunny here this morning, which makes their colours look even brighter.

Is it only your goldfinches that disappear in Winter? I think the ones in my garden are here all year round.

We get a lot of comings and goings, ornithologically. While a lot of birds migrate long distances, others don't go far and some stay put. We see seasonal variances with a lot of the coastal birds round here, like oystercatchers, redshanks and curlews. Even the gull population varies - we see a lot of black-headed gulls in winter, but not so many in summer. Common birds like starlings can have wide variations as well, with birds coming to the UK from eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Thrushes are another obvious example of this, with lots of birds like fieldfares and redwings wintering here.

Saw some redwings the other day in my garden. They are rather striking when viewed close-up (with binoculars).
I haven't seen any this winter. Sometimes we see a few around here, usually in the company of the larger fieldfares. I once saw a big flock of redwings that came and raided some trees that were laden with berries just outside the house in Abingdon I was living in at the time. The berries didn't last long.

My birthday is tomorrow and for the past weeks I'm full on drama queen turbo mode on because this is my second birthday in lockdown and I've been so miserable about not having a dinner party and birthday cake and blowing candles, etc, so boyfriend spent the last weeks ordering me a surprise, personalized birthday cake, but he ordered a flavor I don't like  . I don't like cake, the exception being sponge cake with egg candy, I LOVE it and I only get to eat it on my birthday. He ordered me chocolate cake  I'm very happy about the surprise cake and it's a good thing my mom called yesterday inviting me for dinner on my bday so my family will eat the cake, otherwise I'd have to freeze the chocolate cake and wait for the pandemic to be over so I can give it to someone, but boyfriend's very upset at himself for ordering the wrong cake. I'm happy, but he's not lol

I did mention I only eat one cake and at his parents' bday there was chocolate cake and I didn't eat it both times, but men don't notice details lol

It's the thought that counts though. No, they don't listen or at least retain. Craig and I have been together over 30 years. He's NEVER seen me eat strawberries frozen or macerated for more than 2-3 hours because I can't stand mushy strawberries. Yet, every single time strawberry season rolls around once a year, we have to go through only make enough for tonight because I don't like them leftover.

You don't like strawberry jam/jelly? I just picked 8 more for the freezer, I have enough for another batch of jam/jelly.
