Glad you made it through ok. We have rain all day today and storms tonight (though probably not severe).

The storms that tried to form a tornado here got stronger as they moved East. By the time they got to Alabama, they were successfully spawning tornadoes, with five people killed, so far.

None of the super cells spawning these tornadoes is far North enough to effect Ohio -- and too Far East. Alabama is getting hammered.

"The Saudi official who is alleged to have twice issued threats against the independent UN investigator Agnès Callamard is the head of the kingdom’s human rights commission, and formerly served as an aide to the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman."

The Saudi Human Rights Commission? Blimey, that must be a hive of activity. I wonder if they share an office with the Alliance of Foxes for the Welfare of Chickens.

Here in the US, our government turns a blind eye towards Saudi Arabia -- Republicans and Democrats alike. The enemy of our enemy is our friend.

There is currently a big push in the US to fight violence against women -- but Saudi women don't count.

Agnès Callamard's "sin" was probably not properly "respecting" a Saudi man.

Honestly, I am too scared to comment on any of this. There was a time when I read a lot, like several times a day, on Middle East issues...

Oh, joy. Former SNP (Scottish National Party) leader Alex Salmond has just set up a new political Scottish independence party called Alba. We have already dubbed this the Scottish Sexpest Party. Good luck with getting votes from women, Alex.

Yep, I don't get that one, it's as if he is out to hurt the SNP, he can't possibly be deluded enough to think that there is any future in this new party.

Without going into too long of a story, I bought a half-gallon of milk that didn't get opened until the sell-by date on the container. I fully expected to get just a couple of days' use of it, which proved to be true.

I went to make oatmeal this morning, gave the milk a sniff, and it smelled like no other kind of off milk has ever smelled.

You know how bad milk usually just smells sour? This smelled almost savory, like freshly-baked meatloaf or pork chops or something along those lines.

Simple Truth organic milk from Kroger. I bought some last week -- it has a "Best if Used By" date of May 5.

Well, you're making me go into my longish story...

I normally buy the same milk, and I'd noticed on the way out the door that it was about 2/3rds empty, so I thought I'd better get another half-gallon while I was out.

I was going to Walmart (looking for the tablecloths I finally ordered), so I figured I'd just get it there, but when I got there, their milk was slim pickings and I was faced with either making a separate stop at Kroger, or buying Walmart-branded milk with a sell-by date just three days away.

I opted for the latter, obviously, and then the last of the milk I already had lasted a bit longer than I expected, so that the Walmart milk didn't even get opened until the sell-by date.

I'll add this - I made breakfast this morning, and since I had no milk, I was forced to use a combination of half-and-half and heavy cream (so... 3/4-and-1/4?) to cook our oatmeal. When MrsT took a bite, she said, "OMG! What did you do to this oatmeal?! It's fantastic!"

The emergency alert system just sounded on my iPhone. Scared the crap out of me.

Seems someone shot a Texas DPS officer (State Trooper) and is on the run. The officer was taken to Dallas by helicopter. He's in critical condition. Bad move. You shoot a cop in Texas, you are screwed. You shoot a DPS officer in Texas, you are probably a dead man walking.

Horrible. How is it linked to you as an individual? Who sounds it? The police? Is it expected to try and recognize and help capture the criminal? Or a warning to keep off streets in case of more shooting?
The only alert system linked to individual smartphones I know of so far is in Japan, in case of stronger earthquakes...

In the US, we have multiple kinds of alerts. You can choose which ones to receive.
  • Alerts issued by your country or region's government
  • Alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life
  • Alerts for extreme weather conditions
  • AMBER alerts (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response)*
  • Public Safety Alerts
I chose to get severe weather alerts, and public safety alerts.

The DPS alert I got today was more of a warning that the shooter is on the loose, and is armed and dangerous. The shooting was 115 miles South of me, so I'm not too worried. He has hundreds of cops looking for him.

The alerts are LOUD, and annoying, so they get your attention. Here is a sample. Turn the volume up to get the full effect.

Yep, it gets the attention. We hear the actual sirens every first Saturday in the month here in Zagreb, supposedly a maintenance thing. It would have reminded me of the war, but it has been over 20 years ago, so it does get my attention, but it does not overwhelm me.
I think the unannounced/unannouncable events scare me more...
a floor above me new owners are renovating a flat, rough construction, apparently they accidentally kicked a brick or similar around 3 am...
Two nights ago, and in my dreams it transformed into an earthquake. It scared me a lot. I woke up from the adrenaline, called the kid, to realize it was only a nightmare...she did not hear me luckily, so she could continue her sleep. It took me 90 minutes and a podcast, to get back to sleep.
