The General Chat Thread (2025)

You can’t see it there, really, but there’s seed under the snow on the deck - the birds were making like ducks on the millpond, with their little feathery bottoms pointing straight up, diving for the seed.
Went outside and filled the bird feeder after the memory jog from you 😊
It’s a decent sized tray (holds about a pint of seed) and half of it’s gone already.
So the hungry wildlife asked me to say thanks TR!

We spend a small fortune in bird seed over the winter. I don’t care how much I put out there for them, it’s gone in less than 24 hours.

Nope, not in the feeders themselves, but they do scavenge the ground around them.
Yeah, that's pretty typical. But ours used to straddle the bird feeder as best they could. We didn't mind. Some people have all kinds of anti-squirrel gadgets and deterrents, LOL. We bought peanuts for them instead, which attracts the blue jays as well. Blue jays are interesting in how they will pick up a peanut, gage it's weight, drop it, pick up another one, etc. until they find the one that weighs the most, then fly off to eat it somewhere else.

I've lost my 5G again

Actually we both have.
We had it until August last year when it disappeared one day and didn't come back until the day a government report was due out on the disabling of 3G to implement 5G and how many rural and remote communities had seen a drop in coverage. We had it back for 10 days and it's gone again :(

Annoyingly there's no 4G signal worth speaking of, so losing 5G is a problem. :(

We only recently got 3G....
And since the tower works on solar, no connectivity between about 21 and 08.
And government wants us to do everything online (with country wide only 4 hours power per day)
I'm on solar (off grid) and had to fork out for a starlink set up.

We have to fork out for Starlink too, in-spite of a large population here the connectivity is appalling.
Heyho.

Thankfully the Australian government provide the equipment for satellite BB free. You then just choose your supplier and pay the monthly fees.

Neither of us trust the person behind starlink so we won't go down that route. The same way we won't buy a Chinese car because of the privacy policies and so on.

I’d rather not give musk any of my money but it’s the only feasible option here!
