Skates are cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae in the superorder Batoidea of rays. More than 150 species have been described, in 17 genera. Softnose skates and pygmy skates were previously treated as subfamilies of Rajidae, but are now considered as distinct families.

I know them as stingrays or mantarays. I've not heard the term skates relating to an animal before.
Skate is delicious! Its known as skate in the UK. Here is something I mede:

Our friends gave us a Halloween package 
4 special types of Dutch beer, cointreau chocolate milk sticks, pumpkin spice tea, Halloween candles and a skeleton mug

We have 5 little new chicks today. 2 have feathered legs and toes.
The last one (not shown) had a hard start to life. I was nebulising when it hatched so my OH picked it up and removed it from the incubator and put it into the nursery. But it would not stop chirping/crying so when I finished nebuluising, I went over to it and picked it up and instantly realised it was very nearly dead from being cold. The hot water bottle came out and was used and it is now warm, dry and silent, sleeping. If it makes it through the night, it will be fine.
The older 3 chicks that are 23 days old, are having their first night outside.
