Ukraine

Anybody seeing this? The Russians are firing on the nuclear power plant in S Ukraine, which is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) nuclear power plants in Europe. A fire has broken out. They are detecting radiation in the surrounding area that is higher than normal already. WTF is wrong with the Russians? What's the point in invading and controlling a country that is poisoned?
 
The fire is at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine and yeah, it's the largest in Europe. The International Atomic Energy Agency is aware and the early warning system isn't detecting anything, and depending on which news agency you read or hear it spins the story in all directions so it's difficult to find out exactly what's going on. I suspect we'll eventually hear if it gets more serious but right now a fire can have many definitions and inferences.

There's a lot of administration and other buildings that make up the Zaporizhzhia plant and from what I understand it's one of those buildings where fighting is taking place. After taking Kherson and then Mariupol Russian troops are moving north on the eastern side of the Dnieper river and the Nuclear plant is on the river and taking control is vital for them obviously. It's hard to say how the fire started but more than likely ground fighting, but who knows for sure right now.

I inmidiatly researched the effects of this as far as it can be googled, but while the worst case scenario could cause another chernobyl like disaster it cannot cause the entire continent of Europe to become uninhabitable and a nuclear plant can also not explode (thank heavens for that). So while it's understandable that this causes panic and it's atrocious that the Russians are doing this, the media and BJ crying 'Europe will be destroyed' are exxagarating.
It just shows how far Poetin is willing to go though, he's gone completely bonkers and will risk anything.

CALLING FOR A CEASEFIRE IN UKRAINE
03 MARCH 202


1. The Foreign Ministers of ASEAN are deeply troubled by the intensifying gravity of the situation and ensuing worsening humanitarian conditions resulting from the ongoing military hostilities in Ukraine. We therefore, call for an immediate ceasefire or armistice and continuation of political dialogues that would lead to sustainable peace in Ukraine. We underline the importance of a ceasefire to create an enabling environment for negotiations to address the current crisis and avoid expanding suffering of innocent people.

2. Recalling our Statement of 26 February 2022, we reiterate our belief that there is still room for a peaceful dialogue to prevent the situation from getting out of control and halt the growing number of civilian and military losses and casualties, as well as the negative impacts felt worldwide. In this regard, ASEAN stands ready to facilitate, in any possible way, peaceful dialogue among parties concerned.

Yeah, I hadn't heard anything in the media about Europe being destroyed. I figured the contamination would be localized to Ukraine, just can't understand why Putin would fight to gain control of Ukraine and then contaminate it with radiation.

Our media is saying this , which I think is incredibly unhelpful. BJ ( Boris Johnson) was talking about the entirity of Europe needing to evacuate.
I managed to research before panicking so now I feel ok and not too scared. It's bad enough without politicians proclaiming a literal apocalypse.

I understand it's dangerous and incredibly tragic for Ukraine if this happens on top of everything else but framing this as a continent ending event will only make things worse.
Zelensky used this to say Europe should start a full fledged assault on Russia which is also not helpful. I understand his panic and pain but this is not the solution
 
If Putin wanted to hit a Nuclear powerplant on purpose he could and he would if that was the objective. We don't need philosophers in California, or London's speculation on the ramifications of Global Thermal Nuclear War, that just heightens anxiety for no good reason for everyone and what we truly need are good war correspondents on the ground and not a CNN or FOX film crews out of harms way to spin a story either.
 
Now we have Linsey Graham asking for the assassination of Putin OMFG, what a complete idiot, he should resign after making such a comment on twitter and again on FOX. This will be an additional talking point for the Kremlin to further show that Putin trying to protect Russian borders from the advancement of Western nuclear installations that will be televised all across Russia in a few hours. I still can't believe he tweeted that. I can see a call for a no fly zone without understanding the ramifications of that.

The reactors at the Zaporizhzhia plant are totally different than the reactors in Chernobyl. In Chernobyl where hot fuel came into contact with water causing a steam explosion that blew the top of the reactor that then ruptured the other fuel tubes causing a second explosion which then caused it to be exposed to the air. This can't happen here and if a bomb happen to hit the bullseye apparently what would happen is the fuel would sink through downward in the reactor and into the earth until it cooled enough to stop. That's my take on it, so the radiation clouds that threatened apparently can't happen. Also from what I understand the reactor is protected extremely well for this type of scenario, where it gets bombed, so lets hope that's close to reality.
 
I wish someone would just go and murder Putin... All this nonsense is coming from his head, his ego and his lack of self esteem. I don't believe the Russian people want to support this war and I think his oligarch friends would be scared if they realized someone is willing to act.
