Ukraine

I wish someone would just go and murder Putin... All this nonsense is coming from his head, his ego and his lack of self esteem. I don't believe the Russian people want to support this war and I think his oligarch friends would be scared if they realized someone is willing to act.

If only it were that simple. I suspect if it happened we would see a massive power struggle in Russia which could easily end in a war with the Europe and beyond, who would be blamed for the assassination (whether or not they carried it out).

There's no simple solution to this sadly. I'm heart broken with all the Ukrainians suffering but I am also very worried about sanctions that impact innocent Russian people who didn't sign up for this war. Putin is a dictator who rigged the elections and he doesn't care about his people one single bit. Any response from the west has the potential to cause more trouble, but doing nothing is already having tragic consequences too.

Agreed, If Putin was to be removed then the only stable solution would be a military take over. They would then have to be awarded some Ukrainian territory as a face saving offer. How belligerent such a regime might be in the future is difficult to see.

The Ukrainian President leaves a lot to be desired and calling it a democracy is being generous. Nevertheless it begins. Next will be cyber attach's. After that, targeting designated military defenses. Will it get to a shooting war with NATO that's the question.
I don't know enough about their president to render judgements on him, but he did NOT leave his country when he was offered safe passage out by NATO nations. BUT I'll also note Ukraine is far more a democracy than Putin's Russia.

China is an ally to nobody, IMO. China will do what is in the best interest of China. Do they want to hitch their trailer to the Putin Express? A runaway train?

I see China sitting back and watching what happens. If Putin wins, Taiwan is in peril. That's another reason why it is so important for the Western world to stay united against Putin.

CD
The Taiwan thing is the main reason that China is sitting and watching, and actually hopes that Russia wins this. They want Russia to win, and meanwhile they expend no effort. They are eyeing Taiwan.

My fingers are crossed for Ukraine!!! And for the entirety of Europe!

I'm using as little gas as possible now because I don't want to line Putins pockets ! I bought a big slow cooker and Electric hot plates to stop using gas as much as I can.

Putin is not going to let NATO build right up to their border and Russia has been warning the West since the 2008 Budapest Accord. Then in 2014 when a coup in Ukraine ousted the pro Russian President and installed a pro US president they Russia immediately took Crimea mostly because of their installation of Sevastopol Naval Base of the Black Sea Fleet. Again Russia is protecting their borders, they were never going to give that up, never and the west basically did nothing.

The NATO rhetoric continued while equipping Ukraine with military equipment and training since which has forced Putin to show strength along the Ukrainian border. Russia doesn't want Ukraine and still doesn't they just don't want Ukraine to be part of the NATO alliance for obvious reasons. The small initial invasion was to signal they were serious and nobody is backing down and the west hasn't taken Putin seriously enough. If Russia doesn't get what they want in the upcoming 3rd peace talks I'm feeling that this isn't going to end well. Russia will do what it does best in war and that is level the Country. Russia doesn't want to actually invade Ukraine and possess the ground simply because the cost/benefit is ridiculously lopsided, they just couldn't do it, but if Ukraine is not going to be a neutral Country then they will level Ukraine leaving it mostly unusable for NATO, and the kicker here is that NATO really don't want Ukraine in the alliance. The real suffering is the death and destruction of Ukraine. This is just my take on this issue, please no hate, just expressing my opinion.

No hate. Just a strong disagreement with parts of your position. Assuming we all here can all talk civilly about the tragedy, whatever our viewpoints.

During these current "peace" talks Russia still continues to shell Ukraine. Doesn't seem they are going to the table with anything like good faith. If you want to talk, you only shell or bomb to hold your own CURRENT position. Ukraine isn't currently in NATO, unless I am vastly mistaken. I know that Ukraine would also provide Russia with another port that doesn't freeze over in winter.

The people of Ukraine are seriously suffering because a foreign dictator (yes Ukraine has over the decades gone back and forth from being Russian territory to being independent) has decided to invade. And while I understand that civilian casualties are a "normal" part of war, the Russians don't seem to be caring about where they target in cities.

China is watching this carefully. How this is handled will certainly affect how they treat Taiwan in the new future. They've already shut down freedoms in Hong Kong, well ahead of the time where they would have been allowed full control of that place.

I support the Ukrainian people, although obviously I can't do a d& thing from where I sit.

Everything is about money. This should be solved with business negotiations and trade deals. But, it seems that Russia doesn’t want to share with the Ukranian people. They just want to take it all. I inow that is a simplified way to describe my opinion on this complicated matter. . I could be wrong.

Just to be clear I'm a person that believes no country should invade another country, period. That of course is just naive. Of course being a pacifist isn't reality in this world and my heart goes out to all the people that have lost their lives and homes. These talks aren't under any ceasefire and the real talks should be between Biden and Putin imo. The US hold all the cards and NATO basically just fall in line. It's the threat of NATO and the buildup of their military with NATO countries supplying Ukraine with these capabilities. Russia isn't buying it. Later.

I would suggest that this isn't Russia invading Ukraine, it's Putin and his unstable mind. The Russian people are on the whole horrified when they learn the truth, and the military are nervous. Rory Stewart, an ex British MP and former soldier with a strong intelligence background has in several interviews over the last few days noted how uneasy the senior generals look when Putin is in the same room spouting off. The Russian military have also been reassuring western governments that nuclear weapons will not be used (just as US officers were reassuring their Chinese counterparts in the final mad few weeks of Trump). Also reported today was how the Ukrainian President foiled three assassination attempts in as many days with the comments coming that he appears to be well briefed about the mercenary squads coming after him and Russian security services are the only ones who knew about them so must be passing info.

Some are. Its difficult to gauge that though, because the media in Russia is pro Putin and explains the war in different terms. The word 'war' is not even used. Unfortunately, I think many Russians probably believe the media message they are given. The situation has recently got worse with Russia blocking access to foreign news websites such as the BBC. Plus, there are serious penalties for those Russians that speak out or demonstrate.
