I had a friend who had a Saab that was always breaking down. It was a nice looking car but my friend was always broke (and the car often was too). Always a "sob" story going on with that one.
Agreed. Way back in another life in Santa Cruz CA I had a late 60's model VW bus I was living in. It was alright given my lifestyle at the time and I think I only paid $500 for it.They have several on the lot here, the least expensive one being about $70K. Word is, they’re a fun novelty if you have the spare change lying around, but not very practical or comfortable.
My sister had one as well. Seemed to sit in her driveway more than she sat in it. Has a 2016 Ford Probe I think now with 380K+ miles on it and going strong.I had a friend who had a Saab that was always breaking down. That's a lot of miles! Usually Asian car makes go amazingly high but for an American made car (not trucks) that's pretty amazing. My sister had one as well. Seemed to sit in her driveway more than she sat in it. Has a 2016 Ford Probe I think now with 380K+ miles on it and going strong.

My husband's 2011 Silverado isn't exactly well cared for but that beast won't quit. He was an insurance adjustor (hurricanes and such) and has driven her to Florida, Texas, Louisiana, the Carolinas (we also took her there on vacation), and all over Ohio, so she has well over 300k.All about the maintenance!
My F150 is an '06 and there are a *lot* of things that don't work anymore but it's safe to drive, the AC/heat works, and the sunroof still goes up and down.My husband's 2011 Silverado isn't exactly well cared for but that beast won't quit. So much for Found On Road Dead being a real thing. My F150 is an '06 and there are a *lot* of things that don't work anymore but it's safe to drive, the AC/heat works, and the sunroof still goes up and down.![]()
We loved the look of the early-90’s Saabs, before the GM-influenced uglification/redesign, but when we test drove one (1992), it was like sliding into the cockpit of a jet - very tight and very cramped - ended up with a Volvo that had seats like a plush sofa (including the front seat, which was a split bench, our favorite configuration, now long gone, except for maybe in a truck).I had a friend who had a Saab that was always breaking down. Those Probes were built on a Mazda 6 platform, so that may have helped. That's a lot of miles! Usually Asian car makes go amazingly high but for an American made car (not trucks) that's pretty amazing.
I have absolutely no patience or tolerance for those types of questions (they actually make me a bit angry!), nor do I have any desire for reminiscing - two things MrsT loves.Sometimes after a few alcoholic beverages my DH will get contemplative and ask me questions like, "What are you dreams and aspirations? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" I hate it when he does that. He doesn't like the answer I give, either.
My parents drove Toyotas for years (and still do), and they love them. I learned to drive on my mom’s 94 Camry and my dad’s 91 Tercel. It’s coming down to a VW or a Toyota. She likes the styling of the VW, but there are real concerns around reliability and cost of repairs, as well as this being the first year of a new engine and powertrain - one is risky enough, but both is really asking for trouble.
The Toyota is the boring-but-safe choice, but it’s harder to get the one she wants. Between three Toyota dealers, the soonest she could get the one she’s interested in is mid-May, where the VW, she could drive away tomorrow with it.
She still has to drive the Toyota, we’re doing that this week, so that could eliminate the Toyota right there - if she doesn’t like driving it, it’ll be the VW.
Gotta be electric???No seasick land boats, comfortable, fuel efficient...that're some of the requirements, yes?
Nope, they’re not quite there yet, IMO, but maybe one day, although there’s a chance this could be our last car purchase. Her current car is 18yo, 250K miles, and we drive much less these days than we used to, so if it’s a decent car, we ought to be able to get 20 years out of it.Gotta be electric???

In 20 years, I’ll be 79 and she’ll be 82, and I really don’t plan on driving when I’m that age if I don’t have to (that’s fine for some folks, just not me).
