What’s going on in your garden (2025)?

I also dig up a huge tub of potatoes. Now to find somewhere to keep them cool.
You’ve sparked a very early memory for me, from when I was about 4yo.

Before we moved to the new place and had room for a proper root cellar, Dad would grow potatoes and store them in small barrels, buried in the ground.

Neighbors probably thought he was hiding money, but nope, it was taters!

The other produce that I hate to pay for is fresh Garlic ... they've been just 💩 for the past few years, so I planted my own, dang it all!!!

I planted mine last Halloween and we had weeks of low teens temps. Just last week I trimmed the leaves where the cold killed them but they're fine. For a while there they were covered in ice. Garlic is tough!

I’m in need some advice.
In a fit of pique over my lack of edible garden I ordered a finger lime tree (pink caviar lime) with the intention of growing it in a pot.
I assumed it would be sent when the weather was ready for it but yesterday I received a dispatch notification. It was -1 c last night. It looks like it gets significantly warmer now but the forecast is never reliable.
What do I do?

Sheltered location or bring it in at night and put it out again after it has warmed up

The idea of bringing a tree in every night isn’t particularly appealing.
I have a sheltered spot but it gets no sun, will it be ok there for a couple of weeks?
Sheltered spot in winter is more important than the sun. They don't do frosts. They may manage it layer on when much older, if it is a mild frost.

There is an alternative, and that's to buy a dedicated insulated fleece for plants. It's a proper garden centre job, and it allows light through. You wrap it up, trunk, pot the lot. They'd be able to give you the best advice, but I suspect it will be an annual issue to be honest, each time you start getting frosts.

I did know they don’t like frosts so I’ve bought a truly enormous pot and wheels so it can be easily moved to safer winter spot but I think I’d rather fleece it up until its big.

I didn’t know the fleece was special fleece that lets light through, that sounds like the way to go. Thanks.

The plant will be here today and the pot will apparently be here tomorrow (I wouldn’t be surprised if the pot doesn’t turn up until the day after that), not sure how long it will survive unplanted. I assume a day or two isn’t the end of the world?

Sounds like that pot is plenty big enough :)

Hope so. I don’t want to be replanting it much. Pot then when it outgrows it then the garden or field, I guess 🤷‍♀️
Spent a fair bit of dosh on the pot hoping it’ll be safe when I’m away and my sons are in charge. It has a water reservoir in the bottom and a water level indicator poking out of the top.

You pour water (and feed if you want) into it until it shows as full and it will apparently last “up to 12 weeks”
Can’t imagine it’s anywhere near twelve weeks in the summer but I have a web cam over the outdoor kitchen (so I know when the dogs have come back) and I reckon I can zoom in on the indicator and shout at my children over it from Spain or wherever I happen to be “WATER THE TREE OR THERE WILL BE NO FREE FOOD FOR YOU”
Or whatever else I can think of that they’d find terrifying 😂

Edit: It’s arrived and looks very healthy, it’s in a 4 litre pot and I’ve placed it in the garage near the window until the pot arrives and I get some fleece.
